The three sided one is easy. (or it was back when I remembered the routine. It would probably take me a bit to remember it) I averaged about one minute 15 seconds. Which is why 2 minutes was the sucker bet. If it took 90 seconds, i'd get concerened.

The four sided one had more possiblities. You could solve it like the three sided one but then it ended with three possible results that only one was solvable. so you might have to do three times to get it right. Hence the 5 minute sucker bet time. 90 seconds times three. But sometimes if it popped on the first solve, it would only take 90 seconds.
And just when I thought I was great, I watched a kid on TV that could do it in about 20 seconds.

The 5x5 seems like just a slightly more complicated version of the 3x3, since the centre block on each face never ever changes.

I did the stickers once.

But if you get it loose enough, you can disassemble it and then reassemble it. That was the type of puzzle I liked to solve .

Man, I can't believe they made that cartoon of Rubik.. what were they thinking?

But of course I watched it as a kid.

Ripley's believe it or not showed a bunch of those guys solving Rubik's Cubes in competitions. I wonder what became of all those people?

I just realized, that I never remembered rubik's cube as being 3X3. The one I had as a kid was 5X5. Wow you learn something new everyday.

and that cartoon disturbs me greatly. I mean, having a show about fast food meals solving mystery is one thing.... this is just .. wrong.

And I didn't realize they had a 5X5 variety either.

There were a number of formulas to solve the thing (the 3X3 kind), but my favorite came from a book and, with about a weeks or three practice, I finally was able to do the cube, averaging slightly higher than 1 minute, regardless of the original pattern. When I did the 56 second time, that kind of "clicked" something in my mind and I never had the urge to practice it obsessively again. I'd still pick it up and goof off for a few minutes, but I had no need to go faster or faster.

I must have used the same book you did, since my average time was in that 1:05 range. I think my best time was around 40 seconds when while doing the first postioning move on the third level, it popped up finished.

It was a #1 best seller. It was titled "The Simple Soulution to Rubik's Cube" by James G Nourse.
It was a paperback sized book with only 64 pages, and made the author rich.

When my daughter asks me about the "cube"... I hand her the book and say figure it out yourself

Same here!! Just under 1 minute...around 20 years ago (scared of getting old)
