Red front is easy once you get the hang of it. I never lose Rostov or Voroshilovgrad anymore, I'm on the offensive in '42/43 and take Berlin around '44. The trick is to build lots of KV-1s and AA guns to defend cities, put howitzers, SU assault guns, and tanks to counterattack around the city (tanks can also fortify), then go on the offensive using Katyushas 1st against the city, then Red Guards, SUs and tanks.
Get La-5s and Yaks to shoot down enemy planes, but don't sacrifice tanks for them. Forget the bomber, its crap. Instead use the Shturmovik.
Build lots of industry. Get as many cities as you can up to turning out 1 T34/85 a turn. Smaller cities near the front can turn out Red Guards, they're suprisingly effective against cities.
Read your history so you know where they're gonna attack then fortify like mad.
In 41, send all units with no home city east. Put minefields and forts at crossings on the Don near cities, particularly Voronzeh(sp?) and the one south of it (S-something), make Cavalry and have them hide in the forests at the crossings with swamp. A vet Cav can take out a PzIV on a swamp easily.
