Considering the amount of development in the field of nuclear fission and fusion bombs, I'd continue that research. I'm sure you could make a bomb that would be powerful enough to destroy the Earth.

Now are we talking turning the planet into a dust cloud, or just killing all life on it?

Stars are bigger fusion bombs than we could ever hope to construct, and the last time I checked they explode in supernovas before they get big enough to be anything other than a local nuisance.

Forge of God! Yup, that was the book alright.

I only got through the first one or two chapters of the sequel. Can somebody here please spoil the ending for me so that I'm never tempted to pick up that book again?

You've gotta turn it into dust/asteroids/fuel for the Sun/etc. It's too easy to just kill off all life (at least all multicellular life) -- just build a doomsday device a la Dr. Strangelove.

Anvil of the Stars was the sequel I believe. I only got through a couple chapters of that one too. Greg Bear is not my favorite Sci-Fi author.

If I were going to destroy the world I would first destroy Mars. Just to see if that gravity thing would take effect and hurl us into the sun. That would be neat.

Why Mars? No one is really protecting it.... that I know of.

How? My P-38 Space Modulator of course!

When? Never.

Why? Because of that pesky rabbit.

My second plan: Build a bomb that uses fluorine as the primary element, that would be capable of destryoing the earth (at least....I'm only thinking of the 10 kTonne version here).

Because of it's abundance of fluorine, I shall call the F-Bomb!
