Trip, in the topped thread, the orange is to indicate: let's get this far, and then decide where to go next?

I don;t know the watercolor graphic very well... what terrain is 777 from Apolyton?

Hmmm... I could definitely make the argument for 4 versus 8 as the first Warrior move, although I do see what you are trying to do.

Orange is a similar path for both routes.

Basically, the first scout will make a big loop, and the second one will go north in a path outlined later. The third will head south in a similar manner as the warrior going north.

777 is desert.

If there's a goody hut just to the north we'll be better for it later. It's also good to see what else we have nearby... could be a thin strip of desert and an excellent city site. We don't know. All we do know is that it's close to our capital, and worth investigating.

Something I now take into consideration in all my MP games. Keep every city defended.
Lux had GOW totally screwed...but they are paying for it now.

As Trip suggests, you can let units pull double duty.
ie park a unit between two cities on a road so that it can reach either city if a wandering Lux warrior ever decides to drop on in again.

This works well very early in the game when you have a tight build of cities, and all you need to worry about is the odd warrior scout.

If you, Trip, are going to follow the Yellow route, then I would suggest modifying it a little as follows:

It takes the same number of moves and reveals a little more territory.

BTW, why can't I attach images here the same way as in other forums? I see this at the bottom of my reply window:

Image attachments in here don't work. Have to get a server or something to put up pictures unfortunately, or make sure you start a new thread for a new image.

Bigfree, that's basically the route I was planning. I was just posting the general direction with the arrows, not the exact route. I suppose I should have mentioned that explicitly.

No problem Trip, I could've figured as much myself and shouldn't have assumed that you would follow the "yellow Brick" road exactly. You seem to have a pretty good handle on the game and I'm confident you will do a great job for our team. I'll try to contribute ideas when and where I can; that is if you hadn't already thought of them first

What about circling the capitol to get an accurate assessment of where best to settle before heading out (the red and the blue arrows)?

Jungle to the south, probably desert to the north. However, we can verify this with the yellow path. I don't anticipate anything too spactacular nearby, but if there is, then we'll see it with the yellow path, then we'll head west to look for land and goody huts.

How about the first Warrior goes: West, West, South. That path hits two Hills, reveals the (probably) the best terrain around our capital, and leaves the Warrior in a great position to go further West, where our opponents (friends) are most likely to be.

Why don't we move the first one onto the hill? (red3)

We can continue moving it through the forest down South and look for a spot to settle before we make the first settler. It's nice for production to have a town with forests, close to the capital.

Then the next warrior can move to the hills North... why not?

Got spare money?

Our first (and second and third) Warrior will be out long before our first Settler. We need not worry about bee-lining for city-sites. NYE was correct when he suggested we should scout a bit around the area. I believe the yellow path gives us the most benefit, as it allows us a better look at the area to the north of us, while we can continue moving him in a manner that has him going west eventually. South of us is a massive jungle, and we won't find anything useful in there. Scouting of the jungle will come much later.

That's the justification of my scouting preference.

Does anyone have any more questions?

(No, I'm not being sarcastic, go ahead, ask )

There's an idea for a movie in here somewhere

Part of my explanation is in the other thread. If anyone is above us heading south, we'll spot them (i.e. probably the only threat that could be coming for us this early on). Also, we get an extra view of about 15+ tiles for the loss of 2 or 3 moves.

It could work either way, but I'm leaning towards making a round first. If you can convince me of the benefits of not doing so, then be my guest. I'm an open-minded individual.

Look down from Apolyton... that's all jungle.

It's WarpStorm's graphics mod. I was waiting a long time for it but WS never released it. Turns out it came with PTW, and I've been using it ever since.

I am beginning to agree with Trip's idea, but mainly because it will help us with city placement. If it turns out we have many desert/mountain sqaures there, we may decide to place our cities than if it turns out to be a little desert/floodplain then plains to the N. We already have a good idea of what is to our west land type wise, grass/forest/hills with jungle to the South. The reason to go eventually go West is to find the best city site there and to try to get a handle on our continent.

Given the possibility of the first new town being south of Apolyton, should we prioritize exploration in that direction?

Say, Warrior1 does the N by W loop Trip describes, and Warrior2 heads south?

Put an end to popups!

Well, there appears to be a lot of jungle that direction, if the C3DG is any clue.

What would be the purpose of scouting the jungle out? No chance of good land, little chance of both spotting goody huts and them existing, very little chance of spotting other teams' scouts.

Everyone please check out the Ministry of War thread for orders update. If you don't see the new picture press Refresh (F5).

It looks like the decision to head north first may have paid off after all.

With the new range of hills discovered, I've tweaked the plan a bit. Instead of wheeling south, I think we should use that chain of hills to help us reveal more terrain in the north-west-ish area. At this point, I'm divided on whether to keep moving further west in a few turns, or moving north directly to a hill tile. I would like to hear what people have to suggest regarding this situation.

As long as we can see that terrain to the due west of Apolyton before our settler is built.

Yep, that's gold. Or, I suppose, it could be aluminum!

Our start location may not be rivers of gold and cattle, but it's much better than it could have been, and quite frankly, I'm pleased with it.
