Sound operating procedures would dictate that you never let anyone of his importance (or Zubaidah, or Binalshibh) fall live into the hands of the enemy. He should have had a bodyguard detail to prevent that from happening. Mohammad with a bullet in his brains would still be a nice prize, but nowhere near as valuable to al Qaeda's enemies as Mohammad with his brains intact.
Spiffor - Ramsi Youssef is one of the lead conspirators in the original, botched WTC bombing in 1993?, when they used a truck bomb in the basement parking structure. He's doing a life sentence at the Federal "Supermax" maximum security prison in Colorado.
Timexwatch - if Mohammad ever went to trial, there's no way he'd escape execution - there are several different jurisdictions in which he can be tried, including the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Virginia, where a death sentence would be guaranteed.
Oerdin - CIA's techniques are a little more "intense" than the Army's, but not torture, unless someone has a real weenie definition. They add a more intense level of psychological disorientation to the manipulation, to make it more effective for getting highly complex information over the long term. Torture is very ineffective for the types and amounts of information that could be obtained from Mohammad, as I'm sure you know, but some of our "squishier" posters don't.
I'm just amazed that one of the guys caught with him didn't blow his brains out to keep him from being taken alive - what's wrong with these guys? Damned amateurs.

Looks like we have the main operational guys (Mohammed, Zubaydah, Atef) in hand or dead.
Getting the finance guy (Sheikh Said) or security chief (Saif al-Adel) would be a good next step.
(edit: clearly want them both alive)

Since these idiots use(d) it as a conduit, I wouldn't be surprised. The biggest wild card of all is the Pakistani government - it's intel services and military are full of people playing one side, the other, both, or fully selectable at will. So once these guys made contact with al Jazeera, I'm sure a lot of assets were looking for movement - Predators tracking cars, looking for patterns of email traffic, watching certain suspects.
You wouldn't have to penetrate al Jazeera per se, but just have a lot of assets ready to move fast on any hard info. What I'm finding more and more interesting is what amateurs these guys apparently are. I mean, we are applying a lot of resources, but several high level people have been taken alive (bad procedure #1), with lots of accessible info on them (bad procedure #2), and in the same areas (bad procedure #3). Apparently, they just don't know the meaning of "lie low" or the concept of information security.
It makes the idea that these clowns could have pulled off 9/11 even more amazing to me.
I'm sure they could have come up with some kind of small boat somewhere, and gotten their asses out of country and more scattered around, but apparently, despite several people getting nailed, they're overconfident enough to stick around, and do stupid, useless stuff like murdering Daniel Pearl, which just pisses off the Pakistani government for no gain.

Thanks for the info MTG, I hadn't considered or read on that angle yet.
I wonder if these bozos are being treated like underground rockstars or something? Enjoying the fame a little too much aye?

Does that mean we've had Mohammed for a while now and this "capture" was just a show? God, I can only hope... |
Yep.
Cynically, one could say it was timed for political gain, but another angle is that a lot of al Qaeda's communications ability are in the toilet. Some people would have wised up to his capture over time, some would know immediately, but have a hard time communicating to everyone.
So after getting what's immediately useful, without any publicity, you then make an announcement, turning on the lights to see where the cockroaches scurry, so to speak. Most al Qaeda types over here probably get their fastest info from the regular news, not their own messed up communications channels.
It also happens to create a positive spin for Pakistan, right at the time we're helping bury any publicity over the fact that the Pakistani air force just murdered the Afghan Miniter of Mines & Industry, four more Afghan officials, and a US citizen working for the Afghan government. So everything ends up warm and fuzzy from every angle.
