Got spare money?

I don't see what's sad about it, NTP works fine for me.

time.nist.gov uses NTP (says so right on their website, in fact).

And seeing as how time.nist.gov actually runs Unix (AIX), I can't say I see your point...

For the record, the reason why you're having trouble is Windows uses RFC-867 ("Daytime"), and NTP is RFC-1305.

They are similar, but Daytime came first.

Damn Unix bastards.

Really? That might explain it.

EDIT: Btw, NTP does a bit more than just reporting back time, as DAYTIME does. They are not quite "similar".

EDIT2, to avoid a bump:

No, it's not DAYTIME. I tracked the call down on my server. WinXP tries to invoke NTP (123/UDP), but the protocol it uses, must be different from RFC 1305.

The website for time.nist.gov says:
quote:
The NIST Internet Time Service (ITS) allows users to synchronize computer clocks via the Internet. The time information provided by the service is directly traceable to UTC(NIST). The service responds to time requests from any Internet client in several formats including the DAYTIME, TIME, and NTP protocols.

So if your NTP clients can't access it, the PEBKAC...

So why are you complaining?

hi ,

, a "dot gov" is going to give us the right time , ......

when looking at three windows at the same time the dot gov was 87 sec's to late , .....

just look at the GMT site and do it yourself , ...

, changing the small battery on the motherboard might be good also for older comp's , .....

have a nice day

WinXP uses DAYTIME (867) on port 123/UDP.

Wasn't daytime a read-only service at port 13/tcp? Just connect and read an clear text ASCII string, without sending anything. I sniffed the packets WinXP sent at 123/udp, they contained 48 bytes of binary stuff, maybe floating point numbers, but not sure. It's certainly not what I would expect in daytime.

Gee, I thought I was being quite original by keeping my clock in sync. I even forced my Linux to sync clock on every startup, not just when I tell it to .
