That's... ironic .

I have minor OCD as well, all I can say is to try to concentrate on not thinking about anything (which I know, sounds wierd and a bit ironic as well) .

Shock therapy is actually extremely benign and far more effective than other treatments. It has (obviously) a bad rep, but things have changed since the days of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Don't be so quick to dismiss it out of hand. Sounds like you've got a serious problem, and those medications aren't doing the trick.

I'm not willing to lose my memory in order to get better

Are there any other medications on the market more effective than Celexa? At the beginning, it was working, but now it seems to have lost its touch.....

100mg of Celexa is one helluva dose... how long have you been on it?

The SSRIs are the best drugs available for OCD; if they aren't working for you, not sure what else to tell ya.

You should try meditation as well, it's a great way to calm your mind. Also a vigorous exercise program would no doubt help too, to get yourself nicely tired out. Relying strictly on medication isn't always the wisest approach; it's best to be wholistic about it. Do some searches for various relaxation techniques and experiment with them to see what works for you.

It's just a question of mental discipline, that's where meditation would help. Any Buddhist temples around where you live? They might be able to get you on the right track with it. I'm not sure about that, but it might be worth a try.

Find a hobby/game you like, when you start obessing
think about the game, it's pleasant, and unimportant.

There is nothing differient about you than a lot of people.

Trying going for a walk and a pipe, stop at your corner
pub for a pint or 2, no more. The point is to relax, get
and some exercise before bed, not get pissed.

P.S. Works for me

I agree with Willem, Lonestar and Jack WWW, and to some extent Ozz.

Especially the exercise part. Regular, long walks work wonders for me, as does gardening.

Also, steer clear of caffeine from early afternoon onwards.

You definitely need to give it more time. It generally takes at least two weeks, if not longer, before SSRIs start to work. No way it would have begun to work already.

Tass - seriously I have/had the same problem as you. I didn't really realize it was a problem (not like I've ever lived any other way) but knew something was off and talked to a professional. I'm now taking one Paxil pill a day and it makes a HUGE difference. You said you've been on the meds about a week - when I got mine they told me that it would take a couple of weeks to kick in.

It's great now. I don't obsess over what I should have said or what I want to say; I don't make sure everything ends up in a pattern (1001 for me); I still do homework but I don't spend all my waking time obsessing over how I won't get it done in time.

My life is significantly improved.

Two things work for me.

1) Ride my bike to work every day. Regular exercise turns me from negative to near-positive.
2) If I get worked up, I meditate: Just pick a sound/word to chant in your head, then relax and shut your eyes for 10-20 minutes. Begin chanting silently to yourself (in rhythm with breathing or, better, heartbeat). Whenever a thought surfaces, let it go and focus on nothing but the word you are chanting.

Even though I do it badly and rarely, it makes me feel at ease whenever I use it. It has nothing to do with religion or cults or anything like that.

What you are on is fine, but I would recomend staying away from drugs like Paxil and Prozac. That is unless you don't like who you are. If you don't like yourself, then takem. Your OCD will go away but you will be a different person

Donegal - I'm on Paxil, and yet I'm remarkably still the same person (albeit I don't obsess), obviously what you said is either 1)an exaggeration 2)an outright lie

You may have also had experience with people taking for a reason other than me - I apparently have Dysthymia and Paxil helps immeasurably.

I have both.

When you walk.....do you feel as if you HAVE to step in the lines between the cracks or else something terrible will happen?

If yes : You may have OCD.

If no: You probably don't.
