long term though is invading another country because of short term actions really the right idea? i think invading another arab country would be sowing the seeds of terrorism for years to come.

So we're just supposed to allow Saddam to escape? We're just supposed to allow Syria to hide the WMD's we fought a war to destroy? We're supposed to allow Syria to get away with thumbing its nose at us? Hell no.

If Syria is really doing this (and that's a big if at this point), then we have to go after them. We have to achieve the goal we have already risked so much for.

The Arabs are already pissed off. I don't think a war with Syria (if justified) will do much more damage. We'd also take care of one of Hezbollah's major supporters, which would ultimately help the war on terror.

but drake there is a difference between feeling threatened and being threatened. if you see americans invading your land it will cause people to rise up who previously only had a distaste for america.

as for syria doing all those things, i dont think the admin really cares. the admin will do what it does in the name of national secuirity whether thats the real case or not.

So you are going to invade a country just because it thumbs its nose at the US? It is precisely this attitude towards other countries that makes them loath/hate/dislike the US.

Besides, you can never stop other countries from making chemical weapons if they want to do so. If a cult can make sarin, you bet a country will be able to.

From what I can tell, this is largely a (media-hyped) bluff by Bush to try to pressure Syria into stopping certain actions by Syria (in particular, granting safety to former Iraqi leaders, probably - also maybe to get them from trying to sabotage any attempts to build a stable government in Iraq). It's a bluff Syra can't afford to call, and it's one that only has temporary credibility (due to the timing after the war - a year from now, this bluff would have less chance at succeeding (which is why this bluff is only good at stopping near term actions by Syria. I seriously doubt this bluff will stop Syria from continuing to support and harbor terrorism over the long term...)

quote:

C. This discovery relates to the aid rendered Syria by France. DEBKAfile’s exclusive intelligence and military sources reveal that, from Monday night, April 14, groups of Iraqi military and scientific leaders have been transferred from Syria to France. This came about as a result of President Chirac consenting to help Assad live up to his commitments to Saddam Hussein and keep their forbidden weapons out of sight and their existence denied.

Is it April 1st again, so soon?

Syria will undoubtably call Bush's bluff, making GWB look even more of a fool. The Arab world will cheer the brave Syrians for standing up to the Americans. Brilliant diplomacy, George.

BTW, Syria is not a signatory to the chemical weapons treaties. So from that point of view they can have as much chemical weapons as they like.

Hmmm... then why did Syria close their borders as requested... They sure look like they are running scared.

While anybody with half a brain knows it's only a bluff, especially with 2 aircraft carriers returning to port, the Arab propaganda machine is doing the job for us. They are so convinced that we will attack, and are repeating it over and over again... they are actually falling for their own propaganda...

Who gives a rat's ass if Syria is harbouring Saddam or important Iraqis. They were only a problem while they were running a country, its not like they're terrorist leaders. Let 'em sit and stew in God forsaken Syria and if they ever need some first rate surgery or such we'll nab 'em when they try to sneak to the west like they did with Pinochet or like they'd like to do with Kissinger.

As for chemical weapons lets have some proof and its gotta be more then a teaspoon.

They'll call it a "security matter" or something. Even without the US pressure, who wants to harbor the leaders of a brutal regime? They would likely win the sympathy of the locals and create a grassroots power to be reckoned with. The last thing Syria wants is competition in the dictator department. It'd be akin to the Jordanians having to kick out the PLO years ago.

The people are undoubtably nervous but they don't matter. Only the dictator, and I suspect he knows a bluff when he sees one.

Why not? The Syrians are a shrewd bunch. By overtly closing the border, they made Bush & Co. think that the bluff worked. Meanwhile, what's stopping them from harbouring Baath Party types if they feel like it? It's not like the US are there checking.

Syria closed there borders after the US had alread secured the other side and most of the important Iraqis and God knows what else who could have gotten through already did. It was an empty gesture.

I prefer to call Iran Persia too. The name Iran came from the word Aryan, the Shah at that time was buddies with Hitler; Iran as a country name is racist and should not be used.
