MACEDONIA - It's the name of the sovereign country to the north of Greece

I always thought that this was the reason. Here, in the old world ( ), the governing bodies seem to be more the sort of a non-profit NGO type of body, while in the US, they seem to be this cartel of directors of teams, or their other name, (which screams "I am a capitalist pigdog, murderer of people", etc. ) "FRANCHISE". like it some sort of a burger shop, or a starbucks, or something.
Moving teams from city to city? almost unheard of.
It's weird, really wierd, for a guy unused to this.

I would agree with this assessment. I don't really think that relegation would work for pro sports in America at the moment, partially for this reason. I think relegation would work well for college sports, however, which are run by a body (NCAA) similar to Old World style governing bodies.

I'm not too enamoured by our form this year either, but I'm not sure it's entirely his fault as we did have a decent season last year considering the portents of doom - I guess those just got delayed a season...
But it is a bit difficult keeping the team's confidence up when everyone and his dog is saying the manager is sh*t including our bastard supporters. I'm also wondering if Di Canio hasn't destabilised the team - because it's only since we sidelined him that we've put a decent run of form together.
quote: I still think you will stay up, but you sure are leaving it late. I wouldn't rule out Birmingham City or even Leeds at this point, but I have to say: whassup with just three wins at Upton Park?? |
We HAVE TO WIN this saturday! Plain and simple, and also hope that Bolton drop a point more than us along the line. Birmingham is another must win and one of the teams that we could also catch is Fulham now that the wind has been knocked from their sails because of that slimebag Al-Fayed aiming to sell his stake.
The 3 wins at Upton Park is because our fans are worse than playing away at the moment - a large section of them are a vile hate filled mob of thugs... The reason why we're in this predicament is the total collapse of our previous 'Fortress Upton Park' form because of damage to players morale - if anything I think our away form this year is actually better than last year!!!
I am actually glad we're playing Bolton away as the pressure of playing that game at home would be unbearable for the team at this crucial stage, sad as I am to say it...
quote: You have way too much quality for that kind of result. |
We have a 'team' of individuals that have only just woken up to the concept that actually playing as a team might get us through this. Part of the reason we're in this fix is because the players themselves no doubt thought that week in and week out until they suddenly realised that they really were staring relegation in the face! Even now we have to rely on the teams around us to slip up to stay up...
quote: Now the Bengels. Wow are you glad we don't do relgations over here! |
Yeah, they'd be well and truly rooted at the bottom of the American Football equivalent of the GM Vauxhall Conference by now!
At least they had an expansion team to spare their blushes!
quote: So, wait, MOB, you like BOTH West Ham AND the Cinncinati Bengals?!
You must have done something bad in a past life . |
Careful you don't annoy me - I might decide to support your team(s)

quote: Indeed. I never understood how none of the american sports have it. |
There is a reason. You had hundreds of local teams in English Football, just about the same situation as baseball. In England, every team joined into the association. In the US, seperate groups of teams formed seperate leagues. There was no uber-league, like in England. You had literally 100s of leagues in the US.
Teams from the major cities joined to form the 'majors'. Instead of inviting the smaller clubs to join them, they instead bought all the best players from them. Later on, they started to buy the 'minor league' teams themselves as repositories for young talent. So while in England, you have a load of local teams join together, in the US, you had the rich city teams join and at the same time wanted to screw the smaller city teams.
Future professional leagues were not local affairs, but were creations of rich people owners. There were only a few owners who would be able to afford a team in American football, basketball, and hockey. There is one major exception: The Green Bay Packers of American Football, who are owned by the city of Green Bay.

i think setting up proper national leagues would be very hard for the states, purely because of the distances involved, in a lower league match it's bad enough for a team to have to get from the south west to the north east, but imagine you had like two US 3rd division teams from new york and LA.
even here we only have five truely national leagues, the prem, divisions 1,2 and 3 and the nationawide conference. after that it splits roughly into north and south (ryman and unibond) and then into local leagues. although unlike the US it is possible to get from them to the nationwide.
