Sahera Ibrahim weeps weeps as her nine-year-old daughter Zena Jassim lies dying of meningitis, at the Saddam Childrens Parc Nurse Villa hospital in Baghdad, April 16, 2003. As U.S. Marines raided Baghdad homes, including that of a scientist wanted for her work on banned weapons programs, European Union (news - web sites) leaders meeting in Greece were set to demand a major role for the United Nations (news - web sites) in rebuilding Iraq (news - web sites).

"Bush also called for an end to the UN-administered "oil-for-food" program, which since 1996 has enabled Iraq to export limited amounts of oil and use the revenues to buy basic humanitarian supplies."

Well, who sucks?
The same people who said Bush/Blair/USA/Britain suck, are now saying Russia sucks.
Pretty old news. Russia, Germany, and France sucked, suck, and will continue (in all probability) to suck.

Oh, okay. Yeah, I'm sure they really don't care about the Iraqi children one way or another. It's not like they're actively trying to depopulate Iraq like they did with the Ukraine or anything.

It seems that the Russians and the French will not give up.

I say, igonre the Russsians, ignore the French and ignore the UN. Going back to the SC for anything can only bring us and the people of Iraq grief.

I am shocked. Russia has sunk to a new low. First they campaigned hard to keep the Iraqi people enslaved under Saddam. Now they are campaigning to keep the Iraqi people under these crippling sanctions for no good reason. Russia is truly morally bankrupt.

Every country sucks. Some suck more than others at certain times but in the end just about every country sucks.

The funny thing is people act surprised and shocked when they find out. Armenia sucks! Who knew? Andorra sucks?!?! My stars! Turkmenistan sucks!?! Who woulda thunk it?!?!

This surprise and shock is then turned into righteous indignation as shown in the posts above. This is where comparisions to Hitler and/or Stalin are made along with the statement "This is a new low for Armenia/Andorra/Turkmenistan."

In order to solve any country's suckiness completely idiotic statements are made. Sucha as the one above. "We can just ignore them" Rigggghhhhhht. We'll ignore two nuclear powers one the core of Europe and the other the largest country in the world. My favorites are when its America's turn to be sucky then everyone makes statements about how American has gone too far and is a dangerous hegemon...while being protected by that hegemony. Anyway continue with your trolling and knee-jerk responses please.

to Russia

I understand that Russia demands Iraq to be disarmed, even/especially without Saddam : they don't want to have a potential military power in the hands of a US puppet government.

However, the demand to maintain the sanctions is outrageous. Sanctions have had some efficiency in limiting Saddam's research ability, but it was completely inefficient in discouraging him to develop these programs (the theoretical condition for the sanctions to be lifted).

Yes, Russia is demanding the maintenance of the sanction regime to get some of the loot. This utter egoism will continue to kill hunderds of thousands if it is followed. A very big to that. It is absolutely outrageous.

The worst is that I fear France and Germany to follow Russia, in order to save the cohesion of the Peace Side. I sure hope they'll talk to Russia into stopping this disastrous nonsense.

If Iraq had WMD before the war (which the US says it did), and the US has not found any WMD (which it hasn't) then Iraq still has WMD. Flawless logic...

Russia must oppose any move that would help mobs of unorganised Iraqis armed with WMD! Sure, the US say it can't find anything, but who can be sure? Provide the proof that Iraq is free of WMD and the sanctions will be lifted. Russia's just looking out for its security and the security of the world.

I gave a to Russia because sanctions are extremely bad, and should have been lifted years ago. They were somehow useful in containing Saddam, but were completely useless in having him changing his mind. It means the almost only victims of the sanctions were Iraqi civilians, and this terrible cost had nearly no gain, even from a cynical perspective.

Everybody who asks for the continuation of sanctions deserves a very big

Guess who's war ships have been the backbone to inforcing the embargo since its inception? Anwser: The U.S. and Britain. How effective will the embargo be if the U.S. & UK both decid not only to stop enforcing it but actively support Iraqi trade?

The Russians are in an untenable position on this one.

Oerdin, I agree. Ignore the Russians. And the next time they ask for anything from the West, tell them to get lost.

These are my feelings. Undoubtedly, Blair will talk to Bush and Chirac will talk to Putin. I agree with Spiffor that this idiocy of the Russians will be smoothed over and we will go back to the SC to lift the sanctions.

This is just more of Russia's small man syndrome. A large portion of their population still feels humiliated and blames the US for the old communist system imploding and the resulting crash of Russia's world influence.

I sure hope this idiocy will be smoothed over, I sure hope it is only a bluff to raise the Russian bargaining power, and I really really hope Chirac and Schröder will ask Putin to stop it.
But I'm sadly not sure it'll happen. Many idiocies from a country of the Peace Side have been supported by the others in order to keep it cohesive and solid. It isn't impossible that Germany and France will fall low enough as to support Russia on this one

Russia's position seems to be rather consistent. To bring closure to the matter of sanctions, someone has to officially report to the UN that Iraq has no WMDs.

I can understand outrage of the lefties -- they have always consistently been against the sanctions. But as for American hardliners... please, you have no high moral ground here whatsoever.

OTOH, it's not quite clear yet how seriously Russia is going to insist on this idea.

WMDs don't kill people, people with WMD kill people.

It's very consistent as far as Americans are concerned. We hated Saddam, and now he's gone. You all coddled him because Russia has a hard on for anybody that brutalizes his own people the way Stalin did, and now you're pissed because we beat him.

I can also see this point, Azazel. But someone has to officially report to the UN that Iraq is WMD-free. Don't you think so? After all, as Frogger indicated, some rogue (even m.b. terrorist) groups inside Iraq may come into possession of these WMDs if they ever existed.
