And as far as I have found out Audiocatalyst does not convert MP3s to WAV but only WAV to MP3s. But maybe I haven't found out how yet. But that's no problem at all since we have winamp.

Cross post. I have soundforge and a bunch of fairly high end programs for working with wavs.

Heres the program I found

http://www.webattack.com/get/mp3gain.shtml

"MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume. The program does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do, but instead attempts statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear. The changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless, there is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding. "

OK.

Also would you say that soundforge is better than audiocatalyst?

I have to say I wasn't 100% happy with audiocatalyst but I didn't have anything else to compare it with.

AAC is really good. I ripped 3 of my CD's the other day and it sounds really good. Much better than Mp3.

By ACC you mean audiocatalyst?

Yeah perhaps it is good at that but in normalizing it missed one song out of 13

No I mean Dolby's new AAC format. Smaller files but better quality than Mp3.

I like audio catalyst.

Agathon - where do I get the software needed to rip, encode, play and decode the aac format?

THe major minus is that no file sharing utility supports this.

I used to like 128 files, but then I got me some quality speakers.

Ever since I'm encoding all my files at a variable bit rate between 160 and 192.

I don't download above 160 quality though, since it's too large for my bandwiwdth.

Don't talk about file sharing piracy on here or you'll be on your way to Mingapulco. It isn't allowed to be discussed on AP for legal reasons (as I learned from the merciless one himself the other day).

Unless you have a Mac I don't know what you can use. If you have a Mac, itunes 4 supports AAC ripping from CD's (which is perfectly legal as long as you own the CD).

If you are on Windoze you are out of luck. Dolby did very good work to destroy all free encoders.
There is some work to create AAC encoder without Dolby interference, but it is in progress and would take around one and half year do do properly.

This is one of reasons why I would do my format. Then again don't expect too much CD rippers are too low quality to support my format. I would like to have half hour of sound one third of length of AAC file full 32 bit and 6 chanel sound. See, you need something like ogg.

Agathon, there is nothing wrong with discussing this. The RIAA scum may think they own the world but they dont, nor can they control legitimate use of encoding/ripping programs. The mods and owners here know the difference.

I agree, it's just that the mods here are touchy about piracy being discussed. I got warned about this the other day. We have to be careful to make sure we don't post anything that is seen as encouraging piracy. Don't take my word for it, ask Ming.

I don't know what Windows programs there are for encoding AAC. I only have itunes 4 and have had it for a couple of days.

I'm not sure if its 'the all time best' but sound forge is a high quality program for doing sound file (wav) manipulations. I started using it when I was digitizing my old LP's and tapes. It allows you to do all kinds of professional sound recording and editing, most of which is way beyond what I need.

I think it works well. When I first started converting my collection thats what I did when the wav's needed a lot of cleaning adjusting etc. With soundforge you can look at the entire wave in as much detail as you need and adjust everything add tracks etc.

In my case, though, I just cant see converting my already existing MP3's to wavs then individually normalizing them since with any program it would take too long. Plus a single MP3/CD converted to wavs would use around 7-8 Gigs of space. Its gotta be an automated method. I'll probably give those programs a try this weekend since I need to burn some MP3/CD's.

Got spare money?

gave cdex a try. The problem did not resolve. That file simply refuse to be pumped up.

I tried it in Nero's wave editor, increased the volume there and then it did play louder, but just a bit, but it came out all distorted, almost unhearable.

Still CDEX is better than my previous combination of winamp and audiocatalyst since it can do both jobs at once = convert and normalize. (as many files as you want).

Cool Edit Pro 2 is IMO way better than SoundForge and more professional.

It's also very easy to use and has tons of presets.

From what I read in electronic music magazines, it's considered one of the top begginer's tools, especially for clearing pops and sound.
