The X-men have long been considered an allogory for homosexuality. Especially the whole anti-mutie campaign, as it was largely led by Moral Majority types.

They've been adopted by a lot of minorities.

Saw it last night. Awesome movie. Great first action sequence. Nightcrawler as always kicks a$$. He always was my favorite of the Xmen and I'm glad they decided to include him. The best part of the movie from Hollywoods perspective is that I don't think I've ever seen a movie do a better job of setting up the sequels.

I think Magneto was originally identified as a Eastern European Slav, then as an Eastern European Jew. Comic heroes/villains weren't identified as Jews until the late 70s/early 80s, Kitty Pryde being the first I remember seeing.

Nightcrawler is one of my favorites as well. His best moment was way, way back when Dr. Doom and Arcade have the X-Men all captured in supposedly escape-proof ways, Nightcrawler being in a cube he can't see out of so he doesn't know where to teleport to.

While Doom is bragging about his accomplishment, Arcade starts laughing and points out Nightcrawler ain't in his cube anymore. Best "to be continued..." ever.

OK, I'm going way the hell back here, but ...

Wasn't the Pheonix some sort of alien entity that replaced Jean Gray (X-Factor #1 I think? Its been years...) That whole thing was lame.

Great movie, and for the most part better than the comics ever were.

One exception though - would have liked Guardian showing up for Wolverine. Wasn't Department H Canadian?

Yeah, after Jean was very nearly killed Phoenix kept her alive and slowly healing in a pod at the bottom of the ocean (or something). Then, it made an exact copy of her body, personality and memory and inhabited it.

Then later, after Phoenix had become Dark Phoenix and eventually died the recently fully healed Jean's pod came back to the surface and the X-men found it again.

Lame-o-rama.

But what really set this movie apart for me - what put it miles above any super hero film I have seen since the second Superman - was the escape of Magneto. I saw a thread here recently that claimed Magneto was weak and lame. I couldn't disagree more. His escape from his plastic gaol was as satisfying as Hannibal Lecter's great escape in Silence of the Lambs. Bryan Singer obviously drew inspiration from that film. Seeing Magneto manipulating that liquid metal, hovering over the gulf like a transcendant god - it was simply superb. Not since Superman II when Superman crushed the hand of General Zod has a previously impotent character made such a dramatic comeback.
dont know about superman, but that scene was the most fascinating SF scene (both in terms of drama but also the sf behind it) i've ever seen

I loved the scene too, but in hindsight, I think perhaps Magneto enjoyed it a little too much.

I'm sure they are going to change the Phoenix story around a lot. Singer has done a very good job of putting things in a very real, believable context. Phoenix will be a new manifestation of Jean's powers, not a space alien. I'm sure it'll be done very well.

I've heard it suggested as well that the wolf who lead Wolvie into the base may have been some shapeshifter mutant, i forget the name.

Good news is people are considering/beginning to work on Iron Man.

Bad news is Leonardo DeCaprio is being considered to play the part.

Just saw it

Great stuff. Nightcrawler was amazing, and very interesting too, to have such a religious character in the movie (generally these kind of movies shy away from that stuff). The best part with him is when Rogue fell out of the plane. I was about to thinking Wolverine would just jump out and grab her or something with a rope tied to his waist (The whole Wolvie is all-powerful idiotic story idea), but then the teleporting of Nightcrawler was awesome.

And then Wolvie was shown to not be all-powerful, because, let's face it, Lady Deathstrike kicked his ass until the deus ex machina end to that fight.

Magneto was REALLY shown to be immensly powerful. Fixing and stopping the crashing X-Plane, breaking out of prision, and just generally being just about all powerful (which he basically is).

Xavier was shown as the wuss (even though he almost killed everyone), so as these movies seem to be going (the wussy characters become the strong ones in the sequal - Jean Grey, Magneto), Xavier is really going to show his powers greatly in X3, IMO.

titanium isn't magnetic at all. the only three metals that are magnetic are nickel, iron, and cobalt.

that doesn't stop magneto, however, from being able to use his magnetic powers to control all sorts of metal in the comic book. hell, in the comic book, he even has a magnetic shield and can hurl energy bolts.
