It's like a doughnut only hard and bland. I'm surprised it's not big in the UK.

I used to like salt, but now I don't so much. I really like a toasted everything. Something about how the seeds get a little burnt that is yummy. Plus I like it if there is a just a little salt on the everything. Cinamon raisin is alos quite good. When it is hot and toasted, the melting cream cheese kinda combines with the hot raisins to give a honey taste.

Morning: sweeter taste, go for Cin raisin

Afternoon: more meal taste, go for everything

butter is also quite good on a hot cin raisin.

Put an end to popups!

Plain, toasted, generous portions of melted butter, and sometimes with strawberry jelly.

Mmmm...

Good Bagels are not hard and bland. The best are slightly chewy, warm, flavorful, satisfying... Oh man...

AH -

Pumpernickel is a very dark, coarse bread that originated among the German peasants. The name is a combination of the words Fumfer (collaquial for "to fart") and Nixien (a gremlin or pixie). Since the bread was so coarse, it would often induce gas, hence one was possessed by a "fumfernixien," or a "fart gremlin."

You guys all have it wrong, unless the guy who said "salmon" means "lox."

The greatest - and I mean *greatest* - bagel must be a bagel with cream cheese and lox. Sometimes you want a slice of tomato; sometimes you don't. Lox spread may, if necessary, be used as a substitute for lox but the real thing is the best.

Soooooo good.

What sucks is I just went to Dunkin' Donuts here and I can't believe it: no lox spread! They have *strawberry* creamcheese (wtf is that?) but no lox. In fact, the person taking my order didn't know what lox was.

What is this world coming to?

Bagels are inherently Jewish, so I'd have thought that any place with a a decent-sized Jewish population would have bagels.

Bagels are inherently Jewish? Well, they're inherently central and east European, thus lots of Ashkenazi Jews eat them. Sephardi Jews, however, are from the Mediterranean areas (originally Spain) and, until at least the last 75 years, were the majority of Jews in the Low Countries and Britain. I don't know about now, though.

Yes, bagels are Jewish, but you're probably right about why they aren't popular in the UK - obviously not all "sects" (is that the correct term?) share the same culinary traditions.

Kontiki,

Sects is not the right word. This is kind of through ethnicity - tho the DNA is basically the same - as in Central-Europe descended or Spain-descended. Better term might be tradition, though I'm a little uncomfortable w/ that as well. Hmmmm.....

Yes, the dough is supposed to be boiled, before it is baked yet again. A good bagel has a nice crust, and a soft, hut not too soft interior. when toasted, the outside gets hard but the inside remians chewy, yet warm...

MOtreal Bagels? You are nuts, sir, nuts.

Yes - An onion bagel with salmon cream cheese spread unites the various elements that are Apolyton. (though I prefer real smoked salmon & Winnipeg style cream cheese.)
