The problem is that many computer-illiterates might fall for it when visiting 'Poly. And I sure wouldn't want 'Poly to be associated with gator's criminal business

The problem is also that computer illiterates only use that MSIE they get with their Windows OS and also have it unupdated.

quote:
Oh and Ming, there are *other* virus addons for IE that actually bypass the "asking for permission" stage and install new viruses directly into IE just from visiting an infected page.

virus add-ons -> spyware add-ons

Gator and Xupiter aren't viruses. They're just simple spyware. However Gator has even some useful features, despite it's spyware too. None the less you should avoid it.

quote:
UberKruX, and anyone else who's interested in locking down your IE security settings, have a look at http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD You can download a file of sitenames of many of the known junkpushers of the net, that get added to your "Restricted Sites" list in IE 5.0 and up. Keep the security settings for your Restricted Zone set to High, and the scumbags can't set cookies or attempt ActiveX downloads at all on your computer. This does not block the ad itself (thus not drawing the ire of site admins), but does save you from harmful side-effects.

The problem isn't only the security settings of MSIE. First of all it's warmly recommended to use some other browser than MSIE due to it's security issues, bugs and limited protection. Secondary it's recommended to use a list of resricted sites as you mentioned, but also use manual controlling of cookies and ActiveX components. However that's still hindering the problem with duct tape as you would have done, not solving the problem on a multilayer level.

Ming is actually right here. Yes, indeed the problem should be solved as said, but it's not only ACS and the advertiser to blame, if it's clear that the software was installed after he accepted the installation of it. Common sense is that you think twice before you click YES in a pop-up window.

FYI: Gator 4.1/4.0 Privacy Statement and EULA

Forgot to mention that there's uninstallation instructions for all programs by Gator Corporation on their website. Basically you should find the uninstallation programs for Gator eWallet, GAIN and OfferCompanion under Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Very simple.

I use MSIE, and have had NO problems with it.

Granted... I keep it updated. And I use a "few other" utility programs to protect my computer. It gets swept automatically on a daily basis looking for nasty things

But you are right... if you use MSIE... don't update it, don't use any other forms of protection... AND CLICK YES WHEN A POP UP OCCURS... you will indeed have a lot of problems

Opera is good. I'm not against it at all.

However...

I think we did have a more serious concern here called Gator eWallet. Anyone still seeing that pop-up window? I tried to enter ACS with MSIE and surf around, but I never got that pop-up window.

I've never seen that happen on my system. I have seen where pressing no doesn't close the window. Then I just hit control/alt/delete and end the task.

It does happen, especially if you run IE5 (which comes on most early win2k cds for example) without any updates.

Didn't you ever learn about duct tape, boy!?? Duct tape doesn't hide a problem, and it's probably not meant for the problem. Duct tape fixes things, not problems. Besides, the problem should disappear, or else you're not using enough duct tape. (Trust me, you nonbeliever.)

But get real... people who click yes when a pop up appears need to rethink their own security issues. It's like somebody saying... I thought the gun was empty...

I agree that users should not click yes on popups. But sites should also not have dangerous things popping up. Some people may not know the difference. For instance to use the IRC here, you DO have to click yes on a popup.

1. I've seen the Gator popup a couple times, but I can't remember if it was poly that caused it.

2. If I just close the window asking me to accept Gator (not clicking yes OR no) what happens? Any chance it will install? Is it better to click no or just close the window?

I would say that both are as good, so clicking No or closing the window should be as safe as the other option is.
