Clear Skies: I think crunchy was talking about the creation of the EEC in the 1950s where West Germany's role was to shut up, do as it was told, and sign the checks on time. Believe it or not the French wore the pants back then and Germany most certainly was the one in the dress.

The French position is not untenable, its at odds with the American view, and that is all. The current US administration has come to the conclusion that the best way to get what they want is to demonise opposition, be it domestic or foreign. Given that the most prominent foreign opposition is from France it means they are the principle target.

The nonsense about France coming from the US would be laughable if it wasn't so worrying.

That's a pretty nice picture you paint, GePap. It would be nice if the Brits/Canucks/Aussies/Kiwis would be able to so effectively mitigate our more worrisome extremists. But somehow I'm not so certain of that. Something tells me that the Religious Right would get together with the BNP and any similar groups they could find and be just as much of a PitA as now.
