Yep, you're a few balls up, snookered on your last ball and the natural angles for the escape are covered. It's easier than a multi cushion escape sometime.

Plus if you can pot a ball off a swerve you look good which is surely 90% of the point.

Hm, I think it's more side than swirve. A lot of people really whack the white and by doing so cue across the white and also have a tendency to pull the cue back after contact.
