Job: Machinist mate was my rating, but that doesn't even come close to explaining my various jobs. I joined the nuclear navy. Machinist mate wasn't my nuke job of choice- its what I got stuck with . Near the end of schooling I got accepted to ELT school (Engineering Laboratory Technician). Our primary job was water chemistry and radiological control in addition to normal reactor mechanic watch stations. Although on a carrier you can either qualify on the reactor mechanic side or the steam plant mechanic side. I also did some time at a Shore Intermediate Maintenance Acitivity- basically we did intermediate maintenance .

Most interesting duty station: I won't include my ports of calls- they weren't actual duty stations (they were all in the mediterranean and middle east region) I guess all of my schools in Orlando, Florida- although it was a shame I wasn't 21 though . Although strangely you can get into some juice strip clubs in Orlando if you are 19. I mainly went to concerts though and studied.

Sea Story: I've never been a good story teller. Some people have those story telling qualities and can exaggerate at the right time to make them seem more interesting. I've never been good at that. I mostly just saw some touristy sites (Vatican etc), drank, and chased women.

I won't be shooting anyone, unless they charge at me in a busy israeli street. I won't have a gun for part of the service, and the other part I may have a pistol, as I will be an officer.

I'm not going to be a grunt. More of a desk job

paiktis:

1) it is completely silly and undemocratic to be able to pick your place of service.

imagine soldiers will begin to demand not to serve in the front lines, because of any reason they want.

2) the army being in the occupied zones is government policy - not for military, especially grunts, to decide upon.

3) if i want to change the government policy, i can vote, stage demonstrations and so forth.

4) for the n'th time i'm not going to be a damn grunt!

Enlisted Paygrade (rank).

In the US Armed Forces, every service has the same number of ranks. There are 9 enlisted ranks and 10 Officer ranks. Since they are called different things, it's easier to just say "I was an E-3", then we know if they outranked you or not.

Sure, but you gotta remember, who do you think the troops are going to respect more?

The guy who's been in the service 20+ years, or the guy straight outta College (now, some Officers may be prior enlisted).

Only if the O-1 is really stupid, or the E-9 is a jerk.
In the Navy or other branches, an 0-1 is a second Lt. or Ensign and is just out of school or OCS and has really no experience. On the other hand, the E-9 is Master Chief Petty Officer/Chief Master Sarg., with about 15 or more years in before he/she can make E-9. I think you can make E-9 in the Army in less time. Someone correct me on the Army, Air Force, Marines.

Anyway, I enlisted in the Air Farce. Had enough college credits to qualify for E-2, but since I got a medical discharge before I left for boot camp, it doesn't make any difference.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Paygrade: 3 dollars per day. Enjoyed every penny of it.
Service: Finnish Defence Forces.
Job/Rank: Sergeant. Training privates from dressing properly to shooting to combat and the works, training Corporal students who specialize in communication and electronic warfare and little wrestling too, 2nd in command in AA artillery thingie (don't know what you call it, but not the whole battery thing anyway) after lieutanent (in charge if he dies, does all the work since he's always away anyway in training), plus some other stuff which are not of importance, and the ones I have sweared not to tell outsiders .
Most Interesting Duty Station: All boring. The place where Corporal Course took place was pretty interesting. It wasn't that cozy, hence I loved it.
Story: Hmhh.. Lots of stories, but I'm too lazy to post any right now. Maybe later.

I used to work as a cvilian at an army base and my experiance was that the junior officers were called sir by the warrant officers. But it was usually along the lines of Sir can you go and do something now please. the junior officer would say yes sergeant major.

True.

A more accurate statement would be about the pampered doofuses that come out of the state university ROTC programs.

We had this guy named Lt. Cloud I once convinced that we desperately needed "black-out drive oil" one night on a training exercise.

The "black out drive" being a little light on the front of a vehicle to allow night vision googles to be effective for the driver, IIRC. It needs no oil.

This a-hole spent about a half hour on the radio calling around to the supply area and rear support for the oil. The supply guys played along and said it was on back order but they'd send it up as soon as it came in.

Forever afterward he was known as "Lt. Cloud-Nine".

But in combat, there are, AFAIK, very little or no highranking sergeants. They usually are in combat-supporting forces.

I htink it would take a brave 2nd Lt to contradict his staff sergeant.

Every company of infantry in the UK has a sergeant major(warrant officer class2) I think they would have a combat role.
