Boddy.. "fudge packer".. WTF? I am not interested in that. You know not all gay guys do that. So stop with the stereotypes.

And custom builder.. refers to.. buying pieces for my computer and putting together it myself.

It says a lot when you have nothing better to do than make childish trolls with people online.

AMD will be releasing Athlon 64.

It's the first desktop x86-64 (64-bit) processor, it's essentially an Athlon XP 2.0 with 64-bit support and some other tweaks, including an embedded memory controller. That's good because it has very low latency to memory, it's bad because your memory interface is always tied to the CPU rather than the motherboard. So if you ever wanna upgrade your memory speed, you need to ditch both the CPU + Motherboard rather than just the motherboard. However, there's already 100+ errata for the Athlon 64 posted online, and it's been delayed for well over a year, so I'm personally wary of being an early adopter of it. Athlon 64 will be produced on a 130nm process, which means it'll most likely still be quite hot and power hungry.

Intel is releasing its Prescott Pentium 4 (it may be called Pentium 5). Prescott is based on the Pentium 4, but will double all of the cache (L1, L2). It also supported 64-bits, but Intel has disabled that until a 2004 server-version of the processor for political reasons. 64-bit support on the desktop is way premature, anyway. It also supports HyperThreading II (so multitasking performance will be far above the Athlon, just as it is now, and likely future games as well since devs are now doing HT enhancements), and it'll come with SSE3 (13 new instructions) and improved core design for better speed and more throughput. It also has minor tweaks like improved pre-fetchers (predicts what the CPU will need and loads it into the cache from RAM beforehand) and branch predictors (predicts which path the code will take in the CPU, and jumps ahead to try it). Since it's on the brand new 90nm process (with nifty stuff like strained silicon technology, which AMD doesn't have), it will be small (80mm2) and cool and overclock very well.

Thanks man... Can I ask.. what do you recommend and will it be in price range? I want to spend maximum $350... for the CPU, fan, ram, and motherboard. So the CPU has to be within $170.

Just don't brag that you got me switched to Intel or I will ring you neck.

And what do you think of this fan?

Well you won't get either an Athlon 64 or a Prescott for within $170 until probably 6 months after they launch. The 3.4GHz Prescott, for example, will probably be $600US when it launches.

custom building is mor eexpensive than buying a whole machine in a store that still offers you options concerning RAM, CPU, monitor.... of course it also means sh!t components, but high end components are for snobs.

It depends where you go.

Personally, I shop at www.memoryexpress.com

And it is cheaper than store computers, and with higher end components.

That is where I shop from. It is always cheaper buying there than building a whole new machine.

Well I like to be able to put decent components in my computer, you get a far more reliable and stable system...depends on how peripheral the bit is...something like a modem and, well, I couldn't care less because they are so cheap anyway...

At the moment it looks like the Intel will be the better option of processor...I will be after going powerful and spending a fair wedge on it...when I got this one it was the Athlon that was ahead of the field but at the moment it definitely looks like the P4 is in control...although I may wait until the P5, not necessarily for that reason but because I am looking at buying a processor around that time anyway...

Put an end to popups!

Yeah, probably about September or October for me...I just have some plans to sort out too and see what happens first. I have just recently bought a new car so just sorting myself out after that cost - I had lost a lot of money on my previous shitheap...
