One-hit wonders abound in opera and classical music!

Probably the most famous one-hit wonder is Georges Bizet. Carmen is indisputably among the most popular operas ever written, but does anyone know anything else he did? Not likely. Les Pecheurs des Perles is a good opera, but not often done (although the tenor-baritone duet "Au fond du temple saint" is a regular concert piece).

Two notable OHW are often performed together: the one-act operas I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo and Cavelleria Rusticana by Mascagni. The former is famous for the tenor aria "Vesti la giubba" (the crying clown), the later for its celebrated orchestral Intermezzo and the Easter Chorus. Nothing else these guys wrote ever came close to these works (attempts to elevate clunkers like Zaide and The Cherry Picker to their level are met with derision).

Among other operatic one-hit wonders is Weber's Die Freischeutz, Montemezzi's L'Amore del Tre Re, and Ponchielli's La Gioconda (justly famous for the Dance of the Hours, used in Disney's Fantasia, and the tenor aria "Cielo e mar."). Other composers also ended up with only one successful opera, but had other musical credits to their name (Beethoven, Delibes, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, Debussy).

The best-known one-hit wonder in non-operatic music I can think of is Carl Orff, with his Carmina Burana. While orchestras have tried to put on the rest of his cantata trio of which it is part, the other two cantatas are met with reactions of bafflement and distaste.

Other classical composers who have single pieces remembered and the rest ignored include Pachelbel ("Canon in D"), Albinoni (Adagio in G Minor), Dukas ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice"), and Kachaturian (the perennially irritating "Sabre Dance").

Sadly, I remember Hubba Hubba Zoot Zoot from my school days. It was quite painfully popular in my class, and I still remember one poor dope who transcribed all the "lyrics", Xeroxed them and passed them around. It's the pain that never quite goes away.

I only remember one Modern English song, Life in a Northern Town, which I still love. And since the USA never heard anything about Dexy's Midnight Runners before or after Too-Rye-Ay came out, I will classify Come On Eileen as a one-hit-wonder for my purposes.
