Suffering from ads?

Now, the codecs. Vorbis works fine for low bitrates - it's probably the best between 32 kbps and 128 kbps, perhaps even 192 kbps or so. If you want something lower than that, you're treading to the area where general-purpose audio codecs don't really have a chance to work anymore, and so have to use stuff like .mid and the myriad tracker formats or Ogg Speex (for human speech). Above that, proprietary codecs probably beat Vorbis, but more tuning in oggenc *might* change that. Or then it might not, I'm not sure. At really high bitrates you might as well just abandon these lossy codecs and use something like FLAC . FLAC compresses audio to approximately half the size of uncompressed PCM, which isn't very good when you compare it to the lossy codecs, but starts sounding a whole lot better if you're an insane audiophile.

Absolutely, FLAC is in a league of its own, but I think in terms of lossless codecs, ogg is hard to beat!

Ogg isn't very likely to catch on -- it requires an FPU to decode, which means it's not very likely to show up in mobile devices and/or cheap consumer electronics. MP3 (or even WMA) is far more economical.

Ogg is great quality-wise, though.

Have you compared it to WMA Lossless?

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

I havent, although I heard its pretty good, in my experience, flac is sweet!

If quality is the issue and disk space isnt, the little will beat good old wavs!

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

mp3 has better support

there are car radios for example that can play mp3 cds. ogg is still pretty much unkown. or known but not hyped

I stick with mp3s though I do not say they are better. Now what should I vote for?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

AAC is better than mp3 and ogg. Ripping my CDs in AAC has saved a ton of room on my HD.
