It's actually battery, not assault . Or some people use the term 'criminal assault' when they don't want to say battery .

Anyway, cops get more protection so there is a greater deterrance in going after law enforcement officers. Cop Killers also de-stabilize society ()... it's like a hate crime . Also, I guess, it is to add protection to the cops who are already being asked to risk their lives.

Put an end to popups!

Law in the UK is pretty much the same... assault includes spitting, and assault on a police officer carries some pretty stiff penalties.

Not easy to get a conviction though... got to be a reliable witness apart from the officer. Also, VERY unlikely to get a life sentence for it.

Raises an interesting point though... if you are going to get life anyway, why not seriously assault the cop rather than just spitting on them?

Wow. This is pretty freaky ****. A fine would be the right conviction for spitting. The judge must have been high or something.

I disagree that you should be given harsher punishment for beating your wife.

You live with someone for a long time, most likely get sick of thier poo, but you were raised thinking that you have to stick with it, or that you love the person so you ride it out for awhile. One day it all explodes.* Now, you should have also been raised to think that police officers can do no harm (even though they do) so that when the officer steps out of his car to arrest you you sit quietly and wait to be handcuffed. However we all hate authority and how it tries to protect us dont we!? So when the cop steps out you view him as a threat, and assualt him as well. Thats where the harsher punishment comes into play, its supposed to keep you from assualting that officer.

*just like what happens with siblings

I think it's a bit too hard of a punishment for what he did. Sure, attacking government official and placing bodily fluids is serious felony but.. but didn't that one guy just get 50 years for throwing poo at prison guard? I think he got 50 years.

They're not going to take his sh!t anymore.

Sikander, literally yes.

I think there is one dangerous thing in this. If you spit, throw poo etc and get rewarded to spend the rest of your life in prison, which you are in the first place.. Then why not just kill guards? You can't get any more severe penalty. Well maybe DP, but so what.. You can kill bunch of guards while you're at it.

Wow! No one has made any comments on the fact that the person in question has previous convictions. There is a good chance, based on the limited info provided that this guy has had previous assult/battery charges. I believe that the judge in question based the sentence on the fact that this guy has proven to be someone who would assult again.

Maybe she wanted to share spit with you via another way, but a) she was shy, b) your breath smelled...

IIRC, this guy was convicted with rape, and sentenced for 5 years, or so. That's what I find funny. Or, more like ironic, really.

Well apparently he had the good sense not to spit on the rape victim, so they cut him some slack.

Cops need to get their shît together.

Law enforcement is nt just civil service in the 21st century it is a industry that supports Lawers,Judges, facilities, pschologist and socail workers.
It involves criminalization of everything from spitting to smoking,(and these are only in one sphere) crimes against the person.Since there was a alledged assualt against a women the police were probably quite agressive. The police of the 50 's did nt have near the lattitude of force that these officers possess therefore it is reasonable to fear them. They do not have to satisfy many constitutional test to enter ones home or confiscate property. They have access to more records that used to be confidential medical, psych, and financial, therefore it is reasonable to fear* them.
