I need to get AABB on my A-level exams to qualify for a university place without question yet I'm terrified I'm going to get ACCC and be forced to study at Bangor.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Information Technology degree last year. I still work in a supermarket. Last week I went had an interview with the company I work for to move to their IT department but I didn't get the job. That was the only job I have actually gotten to interview stage for in the last year.

I just can't seem to get into the IT industry.

quote:
1. Recently wrote a test in history which I fear won't be as good as it should be (anyway, who am I to judge that hitler's rise to power was legal in every sense of the word?)

I guess not really but the blame falls more on Hindenburg than on Hitler himself in that respect. Either way, is this a test that counts towards your final grade or just a test they look at, go 'hmmm' and discard?

quote:
2. Gonna write a test in social studies this Friday which may get even worse

About... why will it be worse.

quote:
3. We're doing a play in school which is quite difficult ("Lysistrate" by Aristophanes if it helps anyone), I have a big role, and nothing's working. And it's due in ten days. Even the local papers will report about it (d'oh!)

If nothing's working then it can't all be your fault. Contribute, certainly, but don't try to put too much on your own plate. So long as you try to keep your side of things up as best you can no one can fault you.

quote:
4. My computer freaks out every once in a while, just stopping to work for no apparent reason.

Check for viruses? Update your OS. Does it seem to be software or hardware related? If it seems to be the latter then there are probably a lot of the smaller computer shops who will look at it for you and tell you what's wrong free of charge. ( Thought naturally there tends to be a cost for actually FIXING it.

quote:
5. The 'one certain girl who doesn't know' (you know what I mean) will move away to the Baltic sea after end of the school year (which is end of July), and I will never see her again. This is actually eating me most, and the only question I keep asking myself when I'm lying there listening to my favourite music is "why".

It happens. You can follow the advice of others ( "tell her how you feel" etc ) or just not bother. Either way, if she's liable to move away to the Baltic Sea ( living on an island or actually on the ocean floor? ) then you're never going to be able to make a lasting relationship out it. If you feel you've got too much to worry about right now then just don't bother yourself. You're liable to forget her in about a year at the most without any kind of sustained contact.

quote:
6. I'm worried to fail my final exams next year, and I'm really worried about it, because I couldn't bear another year in school.

Then pass them. You're smart enough to be able to find out where your weak points are. Concentrate on them. Start taking mock versions of the exam ( which the teachers will gleefully provide ) just so by the time you get around to sitting the actual ones you won't be freaked by the experience and will be fully familiar with both the layout and the favour questions the examining body likes to ask. At the end of the day, if you put the effort in and revise properly then for the majority of subjects you will pass no matter how you've been doing up till now.

quote:
7. I'm worried that there might be a slight chance that I can fail this year in school, and have to do this class again.

If it happens, it happens I guess. Just try your best with the exams you're expecting to have problems with. You have to remember that at the end of the day the whole point of having a system whereby people repeat a year of school is so that the students in question can have more time on the coursework so that they get better grades at the end of the day. If you honestly try your best at the exams and you cannot pass them then repeating the year might be in your best interests. Besides - girls like older guys.

quote:
8. I'm *this* close to proclaiming myself Lizard King (at least that's what the unknown guy in my head keeps telling me).

Mr Lisa Simpson? I don't really understand the referrence.

quote:
9. My room is filling with empty Iced tea bottles, and I don't know where to put them (too much for the trash can too).

Then stop drinking iced tea. Drink coffee like a real man!

quote:
10. I managed to gain 5 kilos in half a week (well, and lose two of 'em again).

If you have a spare weekend try walking a couple of towns away and then back without eating. You'll quite literally lose stones in weight.

11. I'm trying to write a story, which might become a novel, but I'm stuck on page 1.
Then get it straighter in your head. You might even have writers block, you never know. Start experimenting to see when and where you find writing easiest. Some people like to write in the afternoon while drinking heavily, personally I've always liked late at night with lashings of coffee. The worst crime you could commit is to kid yourself that something is decent when it really isn't, so if the story isn't coming naturally don't force it or it'll come out wrong. Mark Twain once said all real writers have a built in **** detector. Better to only be able to manage a single page of halfway decent prose than reems and reems of trash.

[qupte]12. My favourite record might have developed a scratch.
If it bothers you that much, buy a new copy.

quote:
13. I wanna leave this country. Immediately.

And go where? Everywhere is just as **** as everywhere else, if looked at realistically.

quote:
14. I might run out of things for this list.

It's quite worrying you seem to feel a psychological need to extend it to 15. Do you often find you have an affinity for round numbers? Do you consider multiples of 5 to be round?

quote:
15. +the usual stuff (bad sleep, nightmares, strange things growing somewhere on my body, consistant boredom, loneliness... you name it).

Cool! Nightmares! Do tell! Do they involve LSD, windows breaking or your teeth falling out? All my dreams seem to have involved one or other of these in passing lately.

AAABB

And that was just last year. Should be adding another 5 from this year when the results come through in August.

( Ok, admittedly that's Scottish Highers but I can't be bothered rooting around for the little Qualification's Authority point conversion table Aberystwyth sent me. )

In all seriousness though, there are plenty of Unis that don't have very high admission requirements. Consider Dundee - it's got low entry requirements, is still a proper ( i.e Well Established Redbrick ) University and, as it's in Scotland you don't have to pay tuition fees.

Or maybe you do... it might depend on your nationality.

1. My car is costing me a small fortune to repair, as well as wasting a lot of my time (thoug poly wastes the rest)

Trick yourself into thinking you enjoy it. Simple mental conditioning using chocolate, bright lights or any of a wide selection of soft drugs will trick the body into associating that kind of stimulation with the repair process. ( Of course... there is an even better way... but you'd have to have a very understanding wife... ).

quote:
2. My brother-in-law is getting married in 4 weeks and that will be the 6th, and last, wedding I will have gone to this year. I can't find someone to sit the dog for that time, my wife wants me to take 3 days off for work, I can't afford to fly to Malibu for it, it's a 6 hour drive, and it will cost an arm and a leg just to stay there. Not to mention the 6 other weddings I have had to throw money at this year.

Right well... you have to kind of bite the bullet and go to the wedding ( it is your brother-in-law ) but couldn't you have turned down any of the others earlier in the year? I realise hindsight is 20/20 but... jesus.

You could sleep in the car. I think its a bit **** they would let you crash with them. Do they live in Malibu normally or are they just there for their wedding?

quote:
3. My in-laws let my wive's cousin attempt suicide, and they don't wish to acknowledge that, and this has made my wife very angry at them.

Is there anything you could do to help?

quote:
4. My parents have decided to ditch us (my wife and I) for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year (again, 3rd year in a row) in order to visit my lil' sis and her new husband at the house my parents just bought them for Thanksgiving, and my older sister and her husband at the house my parents bought them for Christmas. We are "invited", but we can't afford the flight due to complaint #2 and #1. And, personally I really resent the fact that they will fly to Denver to visit my sister and her new husband less than 6 months after they get married though they have not once visited my wife and I in the 2 years we have been married.

Next year offer to host it yourselves. If they complain mention that you can't afford the flight costs and you'd really like to be with their family. ( this obviously won't work if A: They can't really afford the costs either and/or B: Your parents and one of your sisters live in the same City/State and it therefore is irrational for thanksgiving not to be hosted there.

quote:
5. Work is getting really busy, and due to clerical errors (not mine) I am getting behind and can't do anything about it. Yet, I know it will all catch up and I will be swamped, about the same time as #2 occurs.

Tough break. Hopefully people will realise it isn't your fault but really there isn't much you could do about that other than just try to get on with it as best you can.

quote:
6. My wives company filed for banckruptcy last week. She probably has 1 month left to work. Which is really nice considering we are so rich!

What are her prospects for getting another job.

quote:
7. My lawn died.

You should move to Scotland. 12 months of rain - you've never seen grass grow so fast! Is it experiencing drought conditions where you are?

8. They raised the cost of my morning beverage by 2 cents at the 7-11!

Two cents isn't that much. The government probably increased the tax by that much so your 7-11 is just trying to maintain its profit margin. Still a pain in the ass though.

quote:
9. They stopped carrying Becks at my liquor store which is very convenient.

You have an emotional attachment to Becks? Experiment. See this as a wonderful chance to expand your alcoholic horizons!

quote:
10. I am probably going to lose the lottery yet again.

If you won it most of the above would pretty much be a moot point so really that isn't a bad thing... just not good. Really, if you're complaining about a rise in the cost of your morning coffee by 2 cents you should think about stopping buying lottery tickets. I mean... have you ever won the damn thing?

1. Between car, college, and credit card money, I've no hope of seeing any sort of money stay in my hands for more than a month for some years now. It is far more likely that I will go bankrupt than manage to tread water, much less make progress.

2. I have a wonderful fiancee, who has been my fiancee for a year and a half now but cannot marry me do to 1. Neither of us is a patient person.

3. I have 3 jobs that keep my busy 50 to 60 hours a week...all of which are student-level jobs, and thus low-paying and with no benefits. (Fiancee has 2 for 40 hrs/wk with the same problems.)

4. I just had a project accepted to the world's premier new media festival, which is rapidly approaching, except that the project I submitted was designed to self-destruct under certain conditions...and it did. So I have nothing to show unless I can rebuild it in a month and a half, while working 50-60hrs/wk. And I have no money to get to Austria in any case.

5. The aforementioned lack of benefits is particularly bad for me, as I have a long history of heart and post-concussive problems which are apparently acting up again lately. Cluster migraines are fun. :/ So are prescription prices. :/

6. My fiancee also may not graduate from college because her parents cut her off financially with 12 credits left until graduation, refuse to sign a FAFSA, and also refuse to co-sign a loan. I'm starting to think that the only way for her to finish is for me to drop out and pay for her...which, obviously, I don't want to do, but I would if it was the only way.

7. My computer is old, at least for what I need it for. And the machines that were promised to me so I could build a Beowulf cluster have apparently now been promised to somebody else, so I can't relieve the strain on my machine (or any of the other old machines in the department.) And the department is also requiring that all students have Powerbooks next semester...which are expensive.

8. I have odd, unexplained red spots all over my legs, which a doctor looked at two years ago (when I had insurance) and said 'don't worry about it, I don't know what it is, but it's nothing major'. And they're growing. It's entirely possible that something is eating me.

9. [insert litany of long-term health problems] But I don't worry about them much, as there's nothing I can do but die someday, so I don't really know if this should be on the list or not.

10. I've become one of the things I despised most: A designer who doesn't write much code. But I make one hell of a flow chart.

11. My car needs an oil change.

14. I can't count.

Well, I guess the two of you have to decide which is more important to you; a big wedding or being impatient.

I suppose you could always see about getting other jobs but I'd suggest you wait until you finish college. Seeing as they have no benefits I'm assuming that you don't have to give notice very long before quitting so if t really bothers you then you could always try and look for other work.

Have you told your contact at the Media Festival? From the sounds of it there really is no way out of it ( if you can afford to go, you can't afford to go ) and you really aught to tell the people organising it that you won't be able to make it if you haven't already.

Don't colleges offer some kind of health cover? I really don't know enough about the American health care service... it's all a bit too bonkers for me.

It sounds like your fiancee has some issues she needs to work out with her parents. Why did they cancel the financial support? Has she tried to reason with them?

Spots ( is it spots or blotches? ) don't tend to mean something is eating you. Its almost certainly some kind of rash. If it was short term chances are it would be an allergic reaction ( which may have been what your Doctor assumed ) but if its persisted you might want to get it looked at ( have any friends doing pre-med? ) Try to find out if you're scratching it - you might be doing it without noticing. If you ARE then you might want to try out E45 which works with most skin irritations.

Yeah but you knew that was going to be what the course would involve when you got into doing computer science ( or whatever it is they're calling it where you are ). It's all pseudocode and flow charts and performance criteria with very little actual coding. I'm sure it'll get better once you actually graduate and start applying what you've been learning in the real world.

between the onset of the relapse and the catastrophe two weeks before i left, i refused to talk to anybody--friends, family, teachers, advisors, rh/ras, and shrinks alike about the issue, preferring instead to act as if i was fine.
i am now on something, which, should i od on it, would cause seizures and possibly death. it's also used to treat nicotine addiction, albeit under a different brand name and dosage.

What has he got to lose? The illusion! The question that should be bein asked is what has he got to gain? Is a 'long term relationship' really what he wants?

Bottom line:

If he does nothing, nothing happens. He can concentrate on other things, she can go off to the Baltic and life can move on.

If he does tell her how he feels two things could happen:

One, she could not reciprocate. He's slightly dejected on account of being rejected and it just becomes another thing to get to him at a time when he's obviously pretty stressed as it is.

Two, she could reciptrocate. Great stuff! If you think there's a good chance of this then sure, go for it. A short relationship can still be a damn good relationship but generally speaking so-called 'long term relationships' are doomed to failure so don't hold any expectations for anything to continue for very long after she leaves.

As it is you can keep the illusion and depending on how you feel about yourself you can either tell yourself she would have reciptrocated or that she wouldn't have. Most people would do the latter but then again most people seem to hate themselves.

If you honestly think she will reciprocate then sure, go for it. But if you think it's only so-and-so or worse, unlikely then don't waste too much time when you've obviously got a lot of other things on your plate you could be worrying about.

Your on something which could cause seizures? I'm no pharmacologist but shouldn't they be looking at the other end of the scale?

You're obviously being pretty honest with yourself about it. Just try to hang in there and for god's sake don't take too much of that stuff whatever it is.

Try to get more exercise and at the same time up your daily intake of fatty suggary things - always worked for me.

yes. however, the other major type of ad usually results in lower libido and has been alleged in the past to cause anti-social and pathological behavior in its recipients.

i wasn't too keen on taking them in the first place. unlike claritin, which also affects body chemistry, this stuff is designed to fvck with your brain. so naturally, i did quite a bit of research and then struggled mightily the first day i tried to take it.

i recall waking up at seven, seeing the bottle, and then arguing with my gf over the phone as to whether i should take it or not.

yeah, i'm exercising too. i'm on the path to recovery, but there are good days and bad days. in one way, it's like an abusive relationship. it just won't go away, you need help kicking it out, and it beats the crap out of you on bad days while you feel ok or even good on the good days.
in another way, i feel like a fvcking stock market.

yes, i have a gf--she and i have been together a long time. she's also well acquainted with this, seeing as she helped me out of the first one. naturally, she picked up on this one rather quickly as well.
