I got it, and like it.
The thing with boarding is, that your ships stop firing once the ship is disabled, but since the ammo has travel time, and small ship are disabled at very low defense levels, they usually die by the time all the ammo reached the target.
I found that the easiest ship to disable is the (Pirate) Enterprise.
Also, the frigate is probably one the best and cheapest ships to capture other ships with. It's also good for mining (Opals: mine in Formalhaut -> sell in Lotus), better manuever then the Asteroid miner, and if you slide sideways, it has a bigger "scoop area". takes some practice to do that right.
Once you do have a big ship, you can try subdueing planets
That's quite hard actually, i've had 6 Destroyers (3 rebel, 3 fed) all fully upgraded, and taking over the weakest planets took me about an hour. and then i was only fighting Frigate, Pegasii, Starbridges, Valkyries and Fed scout ships.
Bigger planets will send Carriers and Destroyers at you.
It's definitely worth at least a few weeks of play time, but i think that after you've finished the most interesting storylines, conquered a few planets, and flew all the ships you wanted there isn't much else to do...But it should at least keep you busy a few weeks if you want to try out all the different races and there ships/weapons.

i've blown up lots of big traders by accident with railguns myself but it seems certain factions go out of their way to kill dead hulks of a certain type. a good example being i'll kill a pirate then some fed ship who weren't in the fight will fire off a few shots to destroy it before i can board it.

cool, i'll have to try that now...

what are some of the easier planets to subdue? what are the benefits of subdueing?
this is probably a well known little trick but i find it useful to enter and exit a planet a few times to see all that is offered there. i used to just check once but i missed a lot of things that way.

i subdued outbound and kania with a kestral(this ship seemed by far the best of all i've tried) but it wasn't exactly challenging or fun once i figured out how to do it. basically i spent most of my time going in circles far away from the defenders waiting for either my shields, or energy to go up high enough so i could make a run and destory a few ships. the only time i died was the first time i tried it and was right next to the planet when all the defenders appeared. i think they unloaded like 10,000 missiles in a few seconds. the number of ships you need to kill is nuts. of course i probably am not the best pilot or very knowledgable about evnova in general so maybe there is a better way to do it.
if you have the unregistered version you can load these
saved pilots and try out all the best ships(or some of them anyways). i used the kestral from the polaris saved pilot in my battle of outbound, and kania.
