i'm bored shitless, and it's only been a month. it's cool seeing all (well the ones not still in the gulf) of my mates again, but going to the local every single friday and saturday and paying silly amounts for drinks just doesn't have the same appeal after being in swansea for a year :/

maybe you're right about the socialising thing, dunno if i could hack it though, good luck with the ex as well

bods, never been to port talbot, but my mate used to play rugby for them and some ugly bird from there fancied me :/ what's so great about it?

2:1? what does that mean? you have a weird grading system. We have percentage grades. I think it's better.

1:1 (first) 70% +
2:1 (upper second) 60 -70%
2:2 (lower second) 50-60%

Don't know about the rest.

I'm averaging 59.3% over my second year (2nd and 3rd year go towards the grade). There's a big difference between a 2:1 and a 2:2 in the eyes of employers so I hear, thus I'll be making a special effort to scrape to 60%.

First semester, all 1:1s, 2nd some 1:1s, and some 2:1s.

It seems that I am about to fail Diff.Eq. so I'll have to retake the exam in the Autumn.

Tell me about it - I've only been out in Eastbourne to pubs once since I got back - I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay £3 for a drink! I prefer getting drunk with my friends round someones house/beach/dangerous cliffs when here - much cheaper

I really can't wait to get back to Swansea though.

Frankly in the circles I work, if you get anything less than a 2:1 you might as well not have bothered going to Uni in the first place...

You need a 2:1 to get into a PhD here (unless you get to the real shitty universities). The grading is different from most of Europe (where I had 81% on my high school baccalaureate and was in the top 10%) to say Manchester University (where I had 68% and finished in the top 5%). I don't think anyone I knew in my course scored higher than 76% and that's from someone with 3 published papers in her undergraduate days.

As for the meeting, not sure anymore, turns out there's a Regatta that weekend. I'll see if we're racing only on Sunday, or Saturday as well.

Grading is weirder at some Uni's. My brother's course (maths at cambridge) a first is 1000 points. The top this year was 2100ish (my brother finished 8th with 1500ish). If you get everything fully right, I think you can get over 3000. It's a weird system, because everyone takes the same papers, no matter which courses you took, and you answer any questions you want (so the more courses you went to, the more questions you can answer). To carry on he needed a first or a high 2:1 and some excuse why he didn't get a first (his girlfriend got a 2:1 but aced her practicals for physics, so was allowed to stay on).
