The UK govt pulled a similar stunt, referring to Invincible class carriers as "through deck cruisers".

Not as small as these proposed Japanese vessels - but again, primary role is ASW platform.

The DPRK has the fourth largest submarine fleet in the world. (mostly commando subs). STOVL carriers would, as has been pointed out, increase ASW capabilities while adding a modest combat role for the fleet.

I doubt these carriers are meant to counter North Korean subs; it'd be cheaper to beef up Japan's land-based ASW forces. No, I'm pretty sure this move is meant to counter China and its attempts to build a blue-water navy.

BTW, does anyone know if China ever bought that Kiev-class carrier off the Russians? I don't remember for sure.

You could've given the English translation, MtG. As it is, only about 5 people on the board can read that.

Check out the geography Panag. A canal across that Isthmus would be MAJOR - maybe not quite as impressive as Panama but pretty close.

Thailand's got major problems apart from worrying about other people's ships... maybe an IMF loan to cover it, but that's an awful lot of money.

A quick google turned up the following:

http://www.iccwbo.org/ccs/imb_pirac...racy_report.asp

This is just the latest week's alert. Seems as if this is a major concern in the SE Asia shipping lanes. With Japan's serious lack of resources, perhaps it is a necessary thing for them to have these carriers in the sea lanes.

One interesting thing from the report was when a master of a ship tried to call for help and their was no answer from the Thai authorities.

A bigger question is: Why hasn't the UNSC addressed this problem and developed an anti-piracy task force to deal with it?

hi ,

been there , seen even the start of it , .....

it would still be cheaper and provide loads of jobs , less problems , etc , only huge benefits

and they dont have to build so many locks as panama , ....

anyway , there are about a thousand and one studies and plans , they have started to dig twice in the last 150 years , both times they gave up after less then a mile , ......

have a nice day

Perhaps a canal is the solution. It seemed from the map that most attacks took place on the route that a canal would avoid.

Yes, but they bought up Australia during their heydays in the 1980s. That much is common knowledge.
