Also remember, any NK attack across the 38'th will NOT stay conventional. NK has highly advanced Biological and especially chemical warfare systems, partly by their own design, but mostly from the former socialist block of the USSR, Libya, Syria, etc. So even if we take out their nukes and a signifigant portion of their heavy artillery, massive damage can be done.

These senarios are why SK and Japan may get nuclear weapons. Then they will be able to respond if they are ever attacked without having to worry about whether or not the US will protect them.

Anyone that's out of range of a possible NK response - bearing in mind the scenerio we are discussing a first strike by NK.

I find so much of what is being said far-fetched.
NK does not have missiles yet that can reach anything more thant he Aelutian Islands, as far as attacks on the US itrself are concerned. It probably can hit Okinawa and the citizens and US troops there: it can certainly hit tokyo. No, NK does not have Thermonuclear bombs; since to do that you need heavy isotopes of water, and no one has said that NK has the wherewithall to manufacture them. So they are stuck with nukes of about Hiroshima or Nagasaki size: but on a city like Tokyo, that is still 100,000+ dead and the health care infrastructure set to its limit.
As for the NK's attack: The NK could not porbaby make it all the way to Seoul before their man thrusts were stopped, if only because of the huge firepower of the US and SK: but they wopuld have done huge daamge by then, and flattened Seol. MOr eimprotantly, the US and SK counterattack would not be easy, given the terrain and 50 years of digging on the part of the North.
As for China: China would not use nukes vs. NK unless the north attaced it, and that would be suicidal anyway: the big question would be if China would shut off all oil and energy exports ot NK at the moment a war begun, and I would say that is most probable, since it would be in China's interest to have a war end as quickly as possible. I doubt the NK would then waste thier few nukes hitting China iun retaliation: Japan is their most likely target (much more likely than SK)

They might have decided that they wanted all of contenental Europe and taken the chance that the US and GB would not retaliate, but this is off topic.

Hypothetically, let's say NK uses tactical nukes all along the DMZ, rendering most of the troops and equipment near there useless. We — as in the United States and our allies — strike back in a similar vein, taking out NK's hardened mountain bases (hmm ... might we need strategic weapons for hardened targets?) and other sundry military targets.
China would sit quietly by? Perhaps. But if Mexico were fighting an all-out war with Cuba (no, not likely, but just bear with me), and heavy fighting was going on next to the Texas border, would the U.S. sit quietly by. I don't think so. At the very least, we'd be screaming our heads off at both parties and maybe a bit more. China would do the same at the very least, IMO. |
First off, NK needs 20X more nukes than it is likely to get in foreseeable future in order to accomplish this.
Second of all, nukes are the big no-no. China understands this. The US understands this. Everybody understands this. If NK launched a nuke attack then you'd have people chanting for their blood across the world. China would probably let NK go at that point. Their other option is to invade themselves. Which IMO, they would see as contrary to their interests (NK being the shithole that it is)

People have been saying that for decades. The problem is that they're almost certain to develop a significant number of nukes before this happens.
And the death throes of a nuclear nation with a chip on its shoulder will not be pretty.

First of all, this is one of the situations where patience seems to be called for. Action now, may prove rash and costly.
Secondly, how long can they last? People just before the collapse of the Soviet Union felt that it might be another 5 years before the country fell apart. We have no idea how long we will have to wait for NK to collapse.
Finally, as for preventing the death throes of a nuclear power has come and gone, look at what happened to the Soviet Union. Even though they have had quite a bit of turmoil, the nuclear weapons have not rained down on neighbouring countries.
I would think the last thought of any ruler faced with an internal rebellion would wish to use nuclear weapons on his own people.
Granted, I fear that if SK stops funding NK, then we will have a predictament if the NK know they have their backs up against the wall, and lash out against Japan. The key is the timing, whether or not the NK will collapse before they can react.
I don't see any good coming from American military intervention at this point in time.
