5 things:

1) A several kg bag of potatoes for one week
2) A several kg bag of rice the next
3) Protein-rich beans rather than meat
4) Multi-vitamin pill rather than fruit and veg
5) Most importantly, cheap cider

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I've got a friend who lives on rice and water plus veggies from the downtown market (Cheap and Good, nice arabs sell), rides bicycle to get anywhere (and we live in a city on the top of a mountain) and spends around $1.5 -$2 a month on phone calls... When he really wants variety in his diet he goes to a friend.
BTW you can earn good money by playing on the street if you can play an instrument decently. It's also fun.

Did that as well to save money at university. If you don't mind hogging a library copier for the first few weeks, you'll do fine.

Why don't you tutor high school students? I did that this summer and got a free meal a day at a pizza place for close to 2 months with just one student. As a university student, you ought to be able to tutor any subject you took before getting into university.

200 is plenty.
You can easy live off 30 for cheap food per month.
If you really want to push it for good food you can go up to 2,50 € a day. But hey, than you live like a king

Just think about it if you spend 50€ a month on food (1,67/day) you still got 150€ for other stuff. Ok lets take out another 40,- € for Eletricity, Cell-Phone, and so on.
Thats 110,- für fun stuff.
Assuming you spend 10€ a night thats 11 nights/m! And you can cut those cost/night in half easy.

Clothing isnt expensive either if you are worried about that. I once bough a pair of shoes, 2 jeans and 3 shirts for 60,- € all together. All new. If you look for second hand stuff there is much more to save!
Flee markets are your friend for small stuff (Need a coffee-machine? Costs around 1,- €)

obiwan18, nope nope nope.. won't work. Tutoring is not an option for me. Tutoring is not any kind of business here, you just can't make money of it, and services like these are free. Too bad .

Odin, nothing is free. Nothing, never.

I can turn to my parents every now and then, if I'm in trouble, but I don't want to take their money. It makes me feel dirty. What Boddington said is good advices, works here too.

It's worth it. A standard 500 page textbook (costing 120$) can be photocopied in an hour (once you get good at it) at a price (including binding) of 10$ (two pages per sheet).

Secondly, if you have 5 books that you need and 4 friends then you each copy one, and before binding it you run the loose copy into the automatic feed (which takes almost no time).

Total cost to you: 2 hours and 50$
Original cost: 600$

That's an hourly rate of 275$

There is a cheaper way, although it's much more labour intensive.

Scan the books into your PC and print them. Even better, don't print them, just burn the scans to a CD.

It's a pain in the arse for a technical tome, but so long as the work is for your own private study it's legal.

Other tips - the big enemy of cheap living is Saturday nights indoors - so get yourself a part time bar job. That earns a little extra cash, gets you out and still lets you chat up presentable females - not a bad deal.

Vitamin pills - take the sting out of cheap living. Lay in a 500 tab supply - much cheaper bought in bulk off the Internet than at your local pharmacist.

Beer brewing - it's quicker than wine making, but setting yourself up with equipment can be expensive. My advice here is buy 2nd hand rather than new - and get a local contact or 2 for advice (put an advert in a local paper or something).

Organising parties at Uni is a great way to get popular (makes getting help easier when you are stuck) and it's also a great way to take your mind off your studies - sometimes very important to take a big break.

Finally, check your accomodation every so often. Cheaper places to live could crop up, saving you a bit of extra cash - so be prepared to move a couple of times after you start.

Untrue. It's still an illegal reproduction. As soon as you return it to the library then you and another can both use it at the same time. Copyright violation.

After a bit of Googling I can say you are right... and you are wrong.

UK copyright law has a few clauses dealing with "Specific Exceptions for Research and Education"

I have no idea how Finnish copyright law works, so will leave it to Pekka to judge the right course.

Anyway, considering your first post, isn't that a touch hypocritical?

This will be too much work (most likely), but if you really want to save money, then you must budget accordingly, and track all your expenses within that budget.

For example, Laura has been doing a household budget for years - if I want to know how much was spent on clothes for me in, say, 1999, I could find out. Everything that we earn and spend goes into her books.... which is invaluable when you hit those times in your life where you really have to watch every penny.

A while ago, we decided that we were going to have to cut $600+/month out of our expenses to make up for increased medical costs (self-employed insurance). Most people would've just freaked and complained about how they couldn't afford it, yadda, yadda, yadda, but we were able to look at our budget and see, that with a little belt-tightening here and there, it wouldn't be that hard to save $600/month:

1. My "allowance" got decreased $200/month.
2. We used to go out to eat at least 10 times a month... at an average cost of $25 per meal (including Sophie). Now we just go out 2 times a month, saving another $200.
3. Sophie was eating jars of baby food, and we decided to cut that out and start feeding her real food... which we tended to have too much remaining after dinner. That probably saved us about $2/day.

and things like that.

The point is, if you don't know the numbers, you can't really make an educated guess as to how to live on a short amount of money.

UK law is different than here, then. AFAIK it's illegal to photocopy copyrighted materials for your own personal use when another is able to use the original at the same time.

Think about it, Andz, how does earning more money make it last longer?

You're not making it last longer, you're adding more.

To make money last longer, the simple solution is to not buy anything.
