Interesting game---- a couple of kibbitzes about matters that have no effect on the current position
it did look a LITTLE like some French lines although my recollection is that most of the better lines do not see black play c4 since the c5 pawn is part of the pressure on d4 ( with moves like Qb6)-- I realize the move order was such that d4 followed . . .c4 but that was a move I had trouble understanding since it reduced chances for counterplay on the Q-side-- MTGs kingside space and mobility advantage was obvious ( even if the bishop was a liittle inneffective at g2.
That space advantage was the reason I question the pawn advance h5 . .. I realize that black is cramped but this just seems to create holes for whites pieces, which are far more mobile on the K side. I thought black might try some play down the Q side
I was also suprised at JWs initiating trades when down that pawn. Some were necessary but I think the light squared B could have been left on. That trade seemed to eliminate a problem piece and give white a tempo in centralizing his King
JW-- I don't mean to be critical . . . I would likely do no better, and probably far worse . . . but I do enjoy analyzing chess games to try to understand the plans of the players and to hear of any tactics that I missed which necessitae a move that other wise looks awkward
MTG-- just curious but how high did your rating go ? I have played competitively in Canada but have never studied the game seriously. I actually often play 1. c4 to take people out of those 23 move memorized lines . . neer neer . . . you talk about , since I never had time or the inclination to learn all the intricacies.
I was actually suprised to find people playing chess here-- I never knew until Bods posted a chess thread in OT.
