Pangaia map. You can build a granary right away,
a few (<=4) cities, equidistant from the capitol.
Use your scout for early contact, do not bother
about research yourself but trade instead.
Get a nice number of Mounted Warriors and
overrun all your neighbours.
That usually does it.
For an OCC or a 5CC, I prefer to play on emperor.

hi ,
number of civs , ......
it seems that even on deity the AI keeps his original starting units , builds a few extra and thats it , ......
after a while you get even with him on the number of units and you can get ready to " bonk some heads " , ......
however , the more civs , the more units , and ones the AI starts to get a serious form of gov and embassies he shall try to get as many AI's as possible to sign up against you , ......
have a nice day

I am a civ 1 and civ 2 vet. I have only had civ 3 for about 3 months and can only play at night. I have beaten the game twice at monarch and once in emporer. I am a 500lb gorrilla on monarch, its too easy. I am winning my emporer game as america now. My next game will be a diety as america or england, I think.
I play standard a standard map, continent, all random ai civ, middle age and weather. I pick my own civ. I think it is the hardest all around challenge. I really think those bigger maps give the human too much time to expand which turns into too much of an advantage. I dont think small maps give enough room to play a whole game. I might try a large map, but I dont think I would try a huge map.
I always handicap myself by not building any wonders unless the civ I am playing actually built that wonder I also try to keep the same form of govt they did in proportion to time. Thats why I prefer america and england in my games.
What I might try next is england on diety then hop over to a new continent, build a FP in Washington and pretend that is the USA. Then I could build both sets of wonders. TTFN.

I play on a Standard map, maximal=7 number of opponents.
You have the hit them fast. Usually, I attack a
civ without resources first. This means that
the Mounted Warriors are immortal. I want to hit
before everyone has republic. At this stage, they
don't have any money to sign up alliances.
The AI has to buiild my cities. If you build more
than 3-4 settlers yourself, you are not fast enough.

always deity, huge map, 16 civs.
when i first played civ2 at 6 years ago, i played in very easy( i forgot the level name). After then, i alway played in deity.
when i first played civ3, i played in deity (used Aztc). Now i like to try every different civs.
The civ3 is very un-balance in the design of the creating GL. I can use 10 shield to build a warrior , after several winning the warrior can create a GL, The GL means unlimitted shield, even though it can only use once.
I very love this design, this make conquest have more important significance. A winning in war is not only give me the peace treat and gold and city and worker ... but also - THE MOST IMPORTANT THING - it can give me a choice to build anything i want.
So i even never build all wonders in civ2, but i build all in civ3, and even more, build all in one city .
Now i play " double your pleasure " in PTW, it have 51 more wonder, however, i build all of them as usual.
So THE EARLY YOU ATTACK , THE MORE YOU GET.
I always can creat my first GL in first 18 turns, this means I can build my first wonder( pyramid usually) before 3000 bc.
so i give your advice is : Do your best in making your warrior upgrade, try to get an elite in first 16 turns, let your worker build road out to make your leader back easy.

7 Civs, standard map, emperor... when I feel I have a lot of time on my hands I bump up the size of the map and maybe add a couple Civs... Deity is not my friend yet.

First of all I agree with you. If you want to have a
more difficult challenge, use e.g. another civilization.
I merely stated a tactic which enables anyone
to beat deity.
If I try this on emperor, I can get a domination victory
before the AI is able to research techs like gunpowder,
i.e. halfway through the second age.
That is certainly not interesting at all.
On deity, I am not able to hit everyone, so two or three civilizations will survive and remain strong
competitors.
When they get nationalism and MPP's, things become
really 'interesting'.

I've tried that. But when they have twice the number of cities with twice my industrial capacity it's hard to beat an AI, even if I'm much smarter. The AI just swarms me. Even if I win, which I do occasionally, I'm too far behind the rest to catch up.
I'm probably one of the rare examples of people who can only beat deity by playing builder.

Attack a civ without horses first. If they don't have
iron as well they will try to attack you with archers.
I consider enemy archers as my potential great leaders.
Be fast. Place your units such that you can attack
2-3 cities at the first turn. After you have taken
4-5 of their cities, you can always negotiate a
favourable peace treaty and move on to the
next target.
