I act like it because I do. Sure, I live with my parents in the burbs now... that doesn't mean I'm a ****ing millionaire... but I grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago. And despite my lack of experience in utter poverty, I read and have learned a hell of a lot more than you. Sure, you may walk around in your neighborhood and observe things but you only created some sort of over-exagerrated generalization of urban poverty. There are poor people everywhere Speer, not just in the inner city. Poverty is a phenomenon, and I've spent years reading about the subject, and learning about it. While you have not... And nobody is saying your experiences aren't valid. It's just that they don't translate into all of America.

And while such a program "National Night Out" works for some communities, it certainly is not a one size fits all solution. If it works for some communities, fine, by all means do it. And I would support a program for communities that would benefit from it. But it hardly is a cure.

My mom's friend was talking about this... her town is making a big deal of it... our town... not so much. Big shock, a rich Jewish ghetto where everybody knows each other vs. a deportation jump-off point where nobody WANTS to know each other.

Well, that's just wrong.
I'm not saying you and your neighbors have to hang bad guys from a street light in vigilante fashion; I'll do that myself, for a fee.
But when the neighborhood turns into more or less an extended family, your first battle is won.

neighborhood i grew up in wasnt rich or suburban - it was a lower middle class ethnic neighborhood in Brooklyn - where people DID tend to know each other, and retired folks sat in lawn chairs on the sidewalk in front of the building, chatting and being nosy. There were certain limits on privacy, but it was a fun and safe place to grow up.

So i'll certainly chat with the neighbors tonight. Theyre not my best friends, but they seem to be nice, and i wish there was more community bonding. My sense is there is less such bonding in suburbs than in working class urban neighborhoods.

Hmmm... this may be true... I know it depends a lot on the demographic.

Where I live, we have a 12% turnover rate.... my town is called "the stepping stone to the suburbs". It wasn't always, but it has become this... so one stays particularly long, and the newest groups of people don't seem to want to have anything to do with the community. They just want to take what they can and run.

MY neighbor hood has decreased in pop by about 30% over the last year; there are 20 houses on my block and 6 of them are empty and 2 of them have just gotten new owners...

Well, in our immediate viscinity, we know our neighbors fairly well...

but with regards to the town as a whole, its much less friendly than say fifty years ago.

Who belongs in my neighborhood? Just about everyone as i live between the park and Target so everyone strolls by. I know all my neighbs and I hangout out front so I see them almost everyday... Why do I need a special day to do it?

Sloww, you can picture me as that guy from King of the Hill who smokes cigs all the time and an't talk to well..., it's damn near close to the truth!
