I drive a Ford Contour. Driving down the road with all of the pickup trucks and SUVs it feels kind of like being a female dachsund in heat being surrounded by a bunch of male Great Danes.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I bought my wife an SUV - an Isuzu Rodeo.

It's great with the baby - Sophie likes looking outside at all the trees and stuff.

We have a lot of kangaroos around here. There's a mob of about 100 living on the hill above my house and a couple of local roads I won't use at night as a result.

I hit one around Christmas, have near misses regularly. The damn thing missed the bar and hit the side of the car, nearly jumped straight into the driver's window. It bounced away and hopped off into the bush. Probably died there but hopefully not.

A kangaroo will easily wreck a car. Its a major accident. An Eastern Grey kangaroo, the most common in woodland areas, is about the size of a deer. They have no road sense whatsoever. I'm glad I have the grill on the SUV, or "bar" as we call it here.

But cars are generally more advanced down there. Isn't car racing huge in the South?

I'm walking home from the theater last night (I highly recommend "American Splendor" BTW), and as I am crossing Ave. A, I almost get run over by a **** in a giant SUV. Nevermind that I had a walk sign.

But this is the part that gets me. This numbnuts had a cow plow on the front of his SUV. A cow plow!? What, is there a problem with loose cattle on Ave. A? Is he afraid that a bull is going to charge at him from the park? A bar low enough to move cats might have made sense, but a cow plow in Manhattan?

This guy could have saved tens of thousands by just buying those penis enlargement things advertised in the spam.

A Miata might be good but it has a reputation as a bit of a girly car. I'd prefer something more masculine like a S2000 or a Boxster. Maybe a MR2 Spyder?

We call it a cattle guard or a deer guard here in the states. It serves the same purpose except it won't save your car from getting totaled if you hit a 1200lb USDA Choice while going 65 mph but it may save your life.

There's talk of banning bull/roo- bars here. The problem is if there's an accident with another car, the vehicle fitted with the iron grill can do a lot of damage to the other car, even kill people. It stops your car from crumpling on impact like it's supposed to. That isn't good for other road users.

They are banned here, partly for that reason, and what they do to people if you run someone over. I mean it's designed to protect the car from hitting a cow/roo and it really f***s up people.

Well, the thing I drive is hardly an SUV...

It's a 1985 MAZDA 626 LX 2.0

It's a bumpy ride and it doesn't even come close to turning on a dime, but it's cheap to own and it just keeps on running.

By the way, her name is Bessie.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Where I am they're legal, but people call them "ramming bars" cause there are no roo's or bulls in New Jersey.
