Bear in mind the book is rough in many spots. If you have a queasy stomach, don't read while eating.

I actually consider the book to be one of the most nihilistic pieces of art ever made. It's an exercise in emptiness and senselessness. Bateman has no breakthroughs or development, so the character is as much an empty bloody cypher as at the beginning. You learn nothing new, and, like a cocaine high, the experience is often exhilirating, but profoundly empty. Like both aspects of Bateman's life - brutal rape and homicide and extreme wealth and material consumption - it's empty, accomplishing nothing but the promotion of further indulgence and destruction, the Ouroborous (snake eating itself) incarnate as character and book.

Empty, sickening, and brilliant.

The film was Strangers on a Train, and was based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith (creator of the talented Mr. Tom Ripley.)
