Yeah it was OK, although I was a bit puzzled at the use of Aristotle. I guess I'm not familiar with the particular context of debates within religious circles.

I don't do much work in applied ethics these days, but I once presented a paper a few years back which argued that if abortion was permissible, then child maintenance payments were not.

In the last few years I've seen a few people say similar things (although I think they don't get how deep it actually goes), but it doesn't seem to have taken off.

The citation of Aristotle came because of the assumptions made by the article I had to refute. The article implied virtue ethics to mask moral relativism.

In comparing her statements with real Virtue Ethics, only then could I expose her true position.

I use that argument all the time! It is extremely effective to highlight the double standard. If it takes two to tango, why should only the mother decide in the case of abortion?

I guess that my qualm is that Aristotle's biological/teleological version of virtue ethics is somewhat different from theistic versions.

What makes you think I'd flame you. I'd make what I thought were constructive suggestions and criticisms, but trashing people's papers isn't my style. IMHO it's bad philosophy.

I was going to do you the service of a full reply, but I didn't have time before I went to the UK and I've spent the time since I got back preparing for a course I am teaching. I've had to translate Parmenides' poem from scratch (because the students can't afford a book), which is hard since I've never really translated verse before.

This is how it sounds in English and is about as best I can do without destroying the original sense and structure.

quote:
… and a single story of a path still
Remains – that it is; and set over this there are
Very many signs, that what is, is ungenerated and indestructible,
A whole both single limbed and unmoved and complete;
Nor was it once nor will it be, since it is now entirely altogether,
One, continuous; for what birth of it will you seek?
In what way, whence, did it grow? Not from not-being shall I allow
You to say or think; for it is not utterable or thinkable
That it is not. What need might incite it to grow
Later or earlier, when beginning from nothing?
Thus, either it must be completely or not [be at all].
Nor will the strength of trust ever permit something out of being
To come to be beside it; For this reason neither for coming to be
Nor destruction does Justice allow slackening her shackles.

Mental enough in English, isn't it.

I will sit down and have a look at your stuff sometime though.
