oh no

Ballads are boring on concerts though, so we all coped well without One, no Creeping Death sucks though.

You didn't get Fight Fire With Fire anyway, now did you? Or Blackened?

We got Blackened.

One was absolutely amazing, probably the best song they played.

Put an end to popups!

I have some symphony X, but it's bad quality or live so I don't listen to it enough.

Sprayber, I liked Metallica's blues/country mix into metal in the Load and Reload albums, if you care for that.

Music = good, singing = bad. Since I can't seem to get into growling vocals, I just can't listen to Opeth. I know, it's my loss.

See that's the thing, though. How much have you heard? Much of their more recent stuff has at least as much singing as growling and the vocals are phenomenal. Try listening to Face of Melinda, Benighted, Harvest, or Windowpane. All those songs have no growling and are great. Next listen to The Drapery Falls and Bleak (both about 50/50). Soon you'll just like all of it .

I do recommend checking them out properly, they're my favourite band nowadays. If you like Metallica, songs like Evolution (The Grand Design), Pharaoh and the Eyes Of Medusa might be your thing.

I have a burnt copy of Still Life that I got from an army pal of mine who tried to get me into Opeth (see, you're not the first one). I just listened again to Face Of Melinda and Benighted and I have no problems with the clean singing there. The songs themselves are good, but not great enough to keep me listening to the growling on the other songs.

Got spare money?

It's all relative to what you are used to.
Listen through Carcass - "Reek Of Putrefaction" and "Symphonies Of Sickness" a couple of times and then switch back to Opeth. Now Opeth's growling will sound just like clean singing and you might appreciate it more

Danzig is not punk? Unless you count Danzig's stint with the misfits.

Danzig is mostly metal. But they obviously retain their punk influences along with blues influence.

Yes, I know it could be a lot worse, but that doesn't make much difference for me. Any growling (or otherwise bad enough singing) ruins the song as far as I'm concerned.

The main problem with Carcass is not that they are heavy, just that they are a bit crap.

Try Goatsblood. Much better.

Bit of an unusual one for them to play. Was it part of a medley or did they play the whole song?

I bet it was part of a medley. They almost never play any of those long songs from the old days in their entirety anymore. Although they did play Master of Puppets all the way through the last time I saw them.

sometimes Metallica will play the first 4 songs from Ride the Lighning. Thought that was back in the Justice days.

Now days they usually put Creeping death, and For whom the bell tolls. Sometimes fade to black.

System of a Down were awesome again at Reading.

One of those bands that win fans everytime they play, even if people don't like their singles, or aren't really into their music.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't like metal. It just isn't hard enough for my tastes for the most part, just lethargic low-pitched rumbling with the headpounding quotient of The Carpenters. A few exceptions exist (currently enjoying that Amen album MikeH recommended) but otherwise there's nothing of the pure clinical energy that real hard music has.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I think that you could leave that out as an exception. To me Amen's not really metal despite having heavy guitars. I'd say it's got the ethic and vibe (and energy) of punk behind it. Which is probably why you like it.

Yep, but then you could make the same claim about every exception I like (Napalm Death's Scum album, Some Motörhead, etc.) so I guess I really just like punk and think heavy guitars are good but only when used in a Stoogesy way.

So what do you listen to, that you call "real hard music"?
