How I miss fatty and unhealthy Panamanian food:

Hohaldras (fried dought), bollos, torrejitas (both made from corn), tajadas (plantain), chicheme (corn drink), sanqocho (chicken soup)

And then the local variations on Tortillas, Tamales, Chicharron (ohh, deepfriedn pork skins, NOT pork rinds)..Heart attack heaven!

that and Fresh seafood from both Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

In DC:

Prince of Georgetown - One block off Prospect and M. The only decent sit-down place in Georgetown that serves food past 11. No alcohol, but great Arab food and hookahs to boot.

Julia's Empanadas - 18th Street Adams Morgan. Great Empanadas at cheap prices. They'll soak up alcohol like nobody's business.

Manoush's - 21st and H (Thursday, Friday and Saturdays after 12, weather permitting) - Best Hot Dog Vendor in D.C. He dishes up eningmatic Iranian Wisdom, homemade sauces and friendly service. Rumored to have sold dime bags back in the 70s and 80s (The code word was supposedly "Extra Relish").

The seafood was good in Panama but I found most Panamian food to be bland.

K&J Orchards produces the best pears and peaches I have ever had (and I have sampled fresh local produce from 5 out of the 6 inhabited continents). One of the proprieters is a recently retired horticulturalist from UC Davis and many of the fruit strains are his creations, so the fruit is truly unique.

Lucero Farms produces the best strawberries and raspberries I have had in North America. This organic producer supplies strawberries and raspberries to Chez Panisse among others (if that means anything to you). His tomatoes and cucumbers are really good too (but this year rains pretty much wiped out his cucumber crop).

Niman Ranch - very good organic meat producer. They have an uncured bacon product that is just like the lardons you get in the French countryside. I also really like their bone-in pork chops and their applewood smoked bacon.

Bruce Aidell - very good fancy sausage maker.

Johnson's Oyster Company (Pt. Reyes) - They farm oysters in Pt. Reyes. Extremely tasty, but they only produce the big local oysters. I believe they call them Sweetwaters.

Hog Island Oyster Company - They farm oysters in tomales bay. Their regular oysters are not quite as tasty as Johnson's, but they also grow the non-native kumamoto variety that I love.

And for the junk food cravers out there - In-N-Out Burgers (really a Southern California original).

BTW - Timexwatch - Is Lumiere still in business? They used to have a duck special on Fridays.

Where is K&J?

There is a little ranch outside of Davis called Impossible Acres that has really good produce... Though in the central valley produce is everywhere you turn.

My wife swears on the Clam Chowder on Stagnero Peir @ the restaurant called "Stagnero's" (near the end of the peir, last place before the sea lions)... There are a lot of restaurants on that peir... Just watch out for old men in red cadilacs!

There is no good local food in Sudbury. It's your typical meat meat meat and potatoes kind of place... aside from the usual horrible chain stores and fast food joints all there really is is a few steak houses, truck stops, chip wagons, and jerky sold out the back of a car on the side of the road.

Well alright, there's one or two good places, I'm sure. The Green Teapot is decent, all organic food and vegetarian options (rare thing in sudbury) I've heard good things about an indian-run motel that serves indian cuisine ever friday too, but haven't tried it yet.


I've never lived in Toronto, but I've eaten there a few times, and I really miss the restaurants they have there. Juice for Life to name one.

Elk Horn Steak House and the cafe right across the street That cafe has the best bisuits and gravy, my bestman's parents use to life about 5 doors down from that intersection...

In terms of seasonings or spices, yes it is, but then its bland like mash potatoes are bland..good comfort food.

I prefer Mrs. Renfro's: their black eye pea salsa is hmm! And the green salsa, good.

Interestingly enough, it is also the cheapest at my local supermarket. (I gues they want to establish a NYC market)

I ate home-made salsa made by a (related) mexican just last night.

Salsa shouldn't be made out of a tomato sauce base. Just chunks of freshly choped vegtibles, spices, and herbs.

Osweld, all I am getting at is that "gloppy tomato sauce" is salsa too. Pico de gallo is chopped up tomato, onion, garlic, peppers, with lime juice and cilantro... and it is also a salso, as is tamatillo sauce which is green. Are you saying that salsa should be green!?
