OK, let's start from the beginning.
A city has 8 adjacent tiles, right?
What's the number of the tile N of the city, and of the other tiles, clockwise?
If the tile N is No. 1 (and the E one No. 3 etc.), the City of Snakes should be 8,8,8,8, but since you stated that its 7,7,7,7, I have a problem of understanding.

Put an end to popups!

Now, about city placement, will it make any difference in terms of corruption if we expand the ring by 1 square?
By doing this, we could have 2 (3?) cities on the coast, 5 on hills (better defence) and add 2 other cities to the ring. It would be as following:
City 4 goes 1 tile N (hill, coast).
City 5 goes 1 tile S (jungle chopped, coast).
Add 1 city between cities 4 and 5 (hill, coast?).
City 2 goes 1 tile S (hill).
City 1 goes 1 tile S (hill, can tap the spices).
City 3 goes 1 tile W (hill, can tap the cow).
Add 1 city between cities 1 and 3 (near the 2 shields).
My 1st positive (?) contribution.

MS: Have you ever moved your units using the number pad on your keyboard (the block of numbers to the right of the main block of letters on the keyboard)? Those are the numbers we are talking about.

code:
789 456 123

So pressing 7 moves your units one square in that direction (north-west). Pressing 3 moves your units one square south-east. 2 moves your units south. 8 moves your unit north.

(pressing 5 does nothing)

In the early days of the strategy forum it was discovered that almost all the regular posters there used the number-pad to move their units and that writing the combination of key-strokes was quicker and easier than writing the compass directions. It was decided among that group to adopt the method as standard for the purposes of game reports and AAR's and such-like.

See, I avoid the mouse when possible. Now I understand the confusion.

My mouse at home is screwy anyway... it's getting worse and worse. Occasionally it just freaks out, skipping all over the screen, clicking on things, etc. Then I have to frantically so for ctrl-s to save and then quit before the damn thing turns my whole army around or something.

Inflate your Upload Space

My Microsoft so-called 'Intellimouse' is a bit daft too. It sometimes stores up a second click and sends it to the following screen.

If, for example, a Civ offers me their world map for Space Flight, I'll click "suggest alternative deal", but the mouse then sends another event to the "accept" text of the trading screen that contains their original offer. Grrrr. A justified reload, I'd say!

I've had to develop a technique of whipping the mouse away after a click on the diplo screen to try and get around this.

****, I totally missed MS's idea (concentrating on hating my gf's mouse, which I've now replaced with my old mouse from my comp - and now things WORK again )!

My bad. Expanding the ring could have been possible, but now we've built 2 of the cities already. Plus, in my experience, full 5-tile (city-tile-tile-tile-tile-city) spacing is wasteful, since many quality tiles remain unworked until hospitals. Plus, tighter spacing often opens up tiles that otherwise would not be useable until a culture expansion, and we're not religious (nor scientific), so getting said culture expansion requires a brutal 60-80 shield investment.

In the MP world, we're using "loose" spacing.

As noted in the last turn thread, we have to change two of our city locations:

The city planned for Izz 366 should be built at Izz 666.

The other coastal city, then, may move to Izzardia 33336. I'm not sure. Thoughts, anyone?

Nevermind that, 33336 would waste a bonus grass tile. 33332 it is.

The only other question I'm pondering now would be if we want to put Burundy at 3666 instead of 666. It comes out of the ring (5.5 instead of 4.5), but it will have more food tiles to work with. My though is that if we stick with the 666 site, the two grasslands useable by that city (only opened up by building the 33332 city)can be irrigated and then the city can use 4 mined hills at size 6 (once we're a republic). 12 shields from the hills, 1 from the city tile, and 1 from the bonus grass = 14 shields/turn, minus waste (2-3 shields, I'd bet). The problem is the time required to mine/road all those hills, and we will probably have to pump workers into it from Izz to get it to size 6 in a reasonable time span. Hmm.

So we are doing a 4/4.5 RCP, while Pythonia is sleazing at 3/3.5?

Just FYI, doing the tighter ring and treating some of the first ring as camps is [/Boston accent] wicked strong [end Boston accent].

That said, I'm cool with what I see so far.

Yeah, we're doing a 4/4.5 ring and Python is doing rings at 3 and 6.

That's what happens when I'm one of the leaders, Theseus - wide spacing Given the nature of this game (Monkey tree policy, general sillyness all 'round), I think we'll be fine.

One thing I've basically banked on is the rapport I have with Sir Ralph, who is acting as Python ambassador to us. Despite what he said in the Strat forum PBEM thread about his diplomacy skills, we seem to get on just fine. I think both of us must be horrible at it, and so we synch up nicely. All I know is that relations with Python seem great. Of course, if this was a more serious game, and I'm SR, I'd swordsman rush us. Perhaps they will. If that happens, we're dead, end of story. We have no iron, and we're the English. We have little choice but to be nice peaceful trader types for a long while yet, and hope our neighbors play along.

Time to dust off this thread.

My thoughts on our next several cities:

1) Badcrumble, built 744 of Swindon this turn.
2) "West Plymouth" ? or maybe just Plymouth (so our mariners can leave from Plymouth and land at Plymouth and say "We've gone 'round in circles, lads, back on the boats!") built at Ciao 4441 with the settler coming out of Izz this turn.
3) Swindon 44444.
4) Badcrumble 112 (interior hill site, but I figure this city can reach size 6, working 3 irrigated grass, 1 hill and 2 mountains, for 12spt... hopefully can make 10spt net with CH and FP in Swindon).
5) Corinth 1112 (aka Mandril)
6) Corinth 44444.
7) Mandril 774*
8) Mandril 112 (call this Cow River for now)
9) Mandril 1444
10) Cow River 4411.
11) Cow River 744444
Plus 4 more cities down in that penninsula, and maybe a 5th at Mandril 74444 (coastal hill, surrounded by mountains). Possibly one more in the northwest, depending on where Python wants the border.

So call that 16 more cities. We have 10 now. Total of 26. The OCN on these settings is 16, plus 25% for our commercial trait = 20. But the FP presents us with a whole new set of cities. So 26 will be well under the OCN. We ought to have a very efficient empire.

We're going to need an HUGE number of workers to develop it, though. I wonder...

Was worker trading discussed as a potential exploit? Like as in us sending workers to Python, which would work as fast as our normal workers but cost them nothing in upkeep? If that's not an exploit, I could see sending them 3 workers and asking that 2 be used for us, and 1 they get to keep and use as they wish. Or maybe 4, with 3 for us and 1 for them.

* - This is where I figure the Palace should go to. It may be a serious PitA to get it there (requiring that we build down most of our core cities so they're low in pop, and of course we would need to boost the jump city... some serious jungle clearing/irrigating needs to go on down there).

Ok, the order of cities...

1) Badcrumble - T97
2) West Plymouth (?) - T102
3) SexyTune (Swindon 44444) - ?
4) Mandril (renamed of course)
5) Mandril 112 (Cow River)
6) Mandril 1444 (New Izz eventually)
7) Corinth 44444
8) Cow River 1144
9) Badcrumble 112
10) Mandril 774
11) Cow River 744444

And so on. If we build a city at Mandril 74444 (NewIzz 77), it goes in late, once we have the time and resources to help it along (it will need a rushbuilt harbor, and a bundle of workers to pump it up to size6. Then it can work 5 coastal tiles + 1 mined mountain. It will produce 4spt. I suspect it will build a library, market and a temple, before being permanently set on building ships).

Most of our workers during this time should be developing the area around Badcrumble and slashing jungle in the Corinth - Mandril - New Izz corridor. Most new cities (especially New Izz, Cow River, and Corinth44444) will be just pumping workers for a bit. I hope to make Badcrumble into worker/settler pump #3.

We need more workers. Lots more.

The northernmost city I contemplated is W. Plymouth, at Ciao 4441. That gets a fish. Not sure about the wheat... maybe with border expansion, I'd have to look at the map again. But I kinda assumed Python will plunk down one more city in that area.

Ok, we need to decide rather soon if the next west coast city is to be at Swindon 44444 or Swindon 44411.

Swindon44444 is pretty close to New Plymouth, but on the other hand it is on a normal grass tile as opposed to a bonus grass. I don't really like it, but right now I'm leaning towards sticking with Sw44444.

Second, we need a name for the city to be built next turn on the ruins of Mandril.

Come to think of it, Catdrill might not be a bad one (though the reference is lost on me), since it sounds kind of similar.

There is always Cheeky Monkey, of course...

I had a look at the screenshot of our lands in the T124 thread.

Next city sites, IMO:

1) Corinth 441.
2) Cow River 4411 (Frisco 221)
3) Frisco 77 (set to scientist, set to harbor, and left that way for a long while).
4) Frisco 4411.

Thread now topped.

Comments/debate welcome.

OK, I've had a look. Corinth 441 is in place, and currently known as Exeter until a more interesting name comes along. I was thinking of calling it India

For the others, the suggested arrangement makes sense for the Palace Jump, and the more juicy locations might as well wait as they won't be productive anyway. Would we need further cities out west for the PJ?

Final ones could be :

Cow River 4411111 (1*5)
Frisco 1111114 (1*6)
Cow River 111111111 (1*9)
Cow River 11111111114 (1*10)
Frisco 111111111 (1*9)

So we're looking at building 8 new cities total. We need to remember that, and upon completing the 8th (or perhaps 9th, so we have a spare lying around) settler, Burundy needs to stop building settlers. It should probably build a courthouse so it isn't totally screwed when we jump the palace.
