why is this France's business? I remember there was another famous Philadelphian convicted murderor (Ira Einhorn) who spent 20+ years hiding away in France. God damn French and their loving of criminals.

as for Mumia, the way i see it is this... the man has been on death row for 20 years or so so there must be enough doubt for him to still be alive. with re-trials and appeals and **** it is clear the original trial was ****ed up. too bad its too late now to have a real trial so this whole thing will stay being a mess until Mumia dies of natural causes probably. (poor mrs. Faulkner by the way)

apparently though Will Cook, the man who Faulkner was beating, had plead guilty to assault of an officer (Faulkner) and wasn't too badly beaten. I think the whole policing the police attitude that Mumia had left over from his BPP days made him too hyped when he saw Faulkner being a little tough on Cook.

and there's the lesson that we're always told... deal with police being bad at the time but take their badge number and sue them later. just deal with it for now.

France is not the only country that allows murders to run free in the their country, people that have commited crimes in the US. Mexico does the same thing. But with Mexico it is even worst. Their silly Supreme Court ruled a while back that life in prision is cruel and that they would not turn over people to the US if they face a death sentence, or even life in prison. The term can be 60 years or less. The major problem is that the US laws dont work that way and causes a lot of problems. Curently there are hunders of people wanted for murder runing around in Mexico, these are all Mexican citizens.

Maybe if countries in Europe and Mexico focusing their efforts on protecting these people instead of murderers things would be different . . .

I will be willing to adopt your point of view when your tough policy toward crime will have proven to be efficient. Right now, there are proportionnally 5 times more people in jail in the US than in France. The difficulty is to prevent crime as much as we punish it. It is possible that Europe is trying too hard to prevent and the US are trying too hard to punish.

In the US crime has actually been going down in the past 25 years. Allthough In LA crime has started to go up because of the gangs here. Also It has a lot to do with the drug trade as well. A lot of crime results from it.

Coupled with being very cheap, made it very easy to get lots of crack. You cannot steal enough to feed a coke or heroin habit unless you're a white collar criminal. To feed a crack habit you only have to give a five dollar blow job or steal a potted plant.

Actually, that's not really true. The crime rate rose and fell with key demographics, being a large number of unemployed/underemployed young men due to the stagnating economy. Crime only began going down when the economy turned up, and has been going up the last three years as the economy has soured.

Given that all the get tough on crime stuff remained more or less the same from the late 80s to now, and the only thing that changed was the level of un/under-employment and the size of of the key demographic that committs crime (young) men, it's pretty clear crime is driven by the economy.

In the French left, Mumia Abu Jamal became the symbol of the evilness of death penatly: a clack activist whose consecutive jusgments were farces, and whose enemies were evil corrupt fascistic cops. Yum.

Paris' new mayor is very much a "new left" guy, i.e well off people caring for non-material issues such as environment, death penalty etc. That he made Mumia a honor citizen in his city really corresponds the profile of his voters, and the profile of quite a good share of Paris' population.

However, it has no impact on Mumia's nationality. The mayor of Paris has no power to grant the French nationalty to anybody. This is a business of the State, and no other institution
