Ah to have the money for a new computer. I guess I'll have to stick it out for a few years . Though at least I'm not hurting TOO bad (probably will be able to 'play' HL2 on 1024 with some of the bells and whistles off).

The "Club 3D" is much cheaper

RAM is a huge bottleneck in video card performance, the 600MHz RAM will be quite a bit faster.

I just got the Radeon 9600 Pro installed and tested in 3dMark:

2001: 9007
2003: 3033

Shouldn't this be much more?

I got the newest drivers installed...


I haven't tested in games yet...

My new Dell has a Radeon 9800. It seems to work quite well except for one little problem (that I have forcefully mentioned to Dell)....


The ****ing card heats up and crashes while playing RoN. I have to take the side off and have a big house fan blowing on the card to keep it going.

I have now experienced several problems with it:

When adding my 250 GB Maxtor Firewire/USB2.0 HD it acts really strange. When using Firewire it can't find my HD, can't install drivers... When using USB2.0 I can find the HD, and it works... though uses very much CPU:



As you can see it uses very much CPU power when opening "My Computer", and copying also takes up very much...


It was completely impossible to have WinAmp 3 running, then the CPU useage would be 100%, but there's no problems running WinAmp 2.91

And by posting last msg, the CPU useage went to 100% for short time...

When doing nothing it keeps around 10-25%


When moving the mouse around the screen, the useage goes from 25-50%

I sometimes have the problems, even right-clicking can take ages but this was even so before installing the 9600.
Some sites suggest it has to do with the updates from MS (no link)

On a side note:

Before I installed this card, I once in a while (once every week or so) I hear some "screaming" sound coming from my computer. I don't know from where it comes from, but I have had this ever since I installed the GeForce 3 TI200

During the last few hours, after installing the new card, I have heard this "scream" 3-4 times...

I found the firewire problem I guess... as I touched it, it fell out... Why didn't it do this why I was inserting the card?

But this doesn't explain the high useage of CPU power


I couldn't find anything else touching anything else... the fan seems to work just fine...

Just tried to start Freedom Fighters (The only 3D game I've got installed at the moment), but it failed:

When starting the config, trying to test all different resolutions, it said: "Unable to create device"

Have uninstalled your previous drivers? (especially nvidia drivers can be a pain to get rid of).
Look in one of the other similar threads, someone linked to a program deliberately designed for this.

One thing I learned the hard way; not all Gforce4 Titananiums are AGP 8X.

As it was a bargain though (approx $35) I wasn't too upset. But if you want AGP8X, do check first.

Thx, I found an app called Detonator RIP, which worked... I can now at least start the games... though in 3D mark 2001 I got 500 points less, and in 2003 I got 100 points more...

I have a 9700 Pro (coupled with an athlon 2700+ heat plant) and have this heat problem too, but for me it's enough to just open the case. I figured out that I need better ventilation in the case, but I'm too lazy to deal with it

I got went from a GeForce2 MX 200 to a Radeon 9800 Pro this weekend.. HUGE difference in gameplay performance!

From the scores I've seen, 3dMark01 is very CPU dependent while in 3dMark03 CPU power has little effect (especially towards the high-end processors).
I get 8876 in 3dMark01 with my new card, which was lower than I expected, but on par with people with similar system specs as mine - Athlon 1.1Ghz, 512 RAM, 266MHz FSB.

I hear that AGP 8x performance is only 1-2% faster than AGP4x performance due to motherboard bus speed limitations. However, I can't prove this or find any proof at the moment.

Same thing here (not the Vid-card but the proc), but only duing summer.
Stretched going close to 60C... it improved slightly when I installed a new fan but I guess I need a couple more.

I have now tried my new card with different games, though not many 3D games. Most of the games run well, but I have problems with SimCity 4 and RailRoad Tycoon III (Not sure if RRT3 has something to do with the graphics card, but it freezes the same way SimCity 4 does)...


... and the Tv-out is pretty crappy... The video quality is like VHS movies
