Y'all suck.

ET still rocks.
Titanic (yes I admit this) was a damn good movie then and while I haven't seen it recently I don't think it could be dated much since then. One of my favorite movies.
Red Dawn still rocks.
West Side Story... when was singing and dancing ever not wussy crap? This isn't a matter of being dated, just being dumb.
Exorcist made me cringe when it was rereleased 2-3 years ago. Still damn scary.
Citizen Kane still rocks.
I haven't seen Labyrinth or Legend recently, but I could deffinately see these as being dated.
Wargames still rocks. Though tech is dated.

well I admit I like Red Dawn-still . Even if the scenario is a bit unrealistic.

I admit I like Titanic a little. I give it 3 stars out of 4. But it was certainly overrated.

Can't go wrong with a movie about killing commies. :P

But seriously, I really like this movie. See this is why gun control is dumb, cause high schoolers need them to defend the nation against those damn cubans and ruskies!

Its a good youth power and patriotic movie. Gets thumbs up from me across the board.

Red Dawn is crap.

Legend was stupid the first time I saw it.

Wargames is dated, but still pretty fun to watch.

Strange Days although set in 1999 is still a great movie to watch.

ACK!

Tired of ads?

I love Red Dawn! It's pure cheese (as it was when I first saw it in the 80s). So in my book it has stood the test of time.

Got to go with MtG on Titanic - everything after the iceberg was neat.

Yeah - ET hasn't stood up well.

I never really liked ET the first time I saw it. But I never saw it when it first came out. I actually didn't see the movie until 1989 or something when it finally came out on video. Iirc, the movie wasn't released to video for like 6 years for some reason. And I never seen it in the theatres.

I was 16 or 17 then, and the movie just seemed to "kiddie"

The Goonies

As for Labyrinth... come on, who can turn down David Bowie's dancing crotch?

and re: 1984. another really bad/dated movie is Fahrenheit 451 by some french director.
looks like they ran out of money halfway through, because they have jetpacks where you can clearly see the string holding them up, with the background an obvious video screen.
oh, and the lovely future-retro of 60's design.

About Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

quote:
Part of the problem is the moving target of race relations and ideas about race. Another part of the problem is that IMO discussing race (or race consciousness more accurately) is tantamount to perpetuating racism.

And this is my problem with Kwai. While it is not about race relations, the assumption of British racial and cultural superiority viz the Japanese is evident in almost every conflict dealing with the main conflict (Guinness vs. Hayakawa), even to the point of referring to the Japanese as "barbarians."

Of course, there was a war on.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you say that the film endorses the view of English superiority to the Japanese? I don't get that sense at all.

I'm afraid I have to STRONGLY disagree with The Neverending Story (part 1 only. the others were crap)

The Neverending Story is, absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time. It maybe have been presented in such a way that it appealed to kids, but it's message was very deep, and very important, with a very strong, engaging plot, even for adults. It's probably on my top ten favorite movies of all time list.

Yes, but not only endorses it, but that the superiority is such a basic part movies world view that it is increasingly anachronistic

I mean, there was nothing that the British learned from the Japanese, and the film is merely a succession of British triumph after triumphs over their poor, benighted, backward enemy. Hell, these British soldiers didn't even "lose" to the Japanese in their final battle (before the movie started, when they were captured) - they were ordered to surrender.

Of course, there was a war on.

This is part of the character.
That is better detailed - or complex - in the book.
He is surely not a hero in the book.
He is more like the caricature of a british officer - at least from a frenchman point of view.
The colonel is indeed arrogant, pompous, old-school and convinced of the european superiority.
He is a kind of symbol of a dying race: the british colonists of the 19th century.
I think the idea of Pierre Boulle with this character was to mock those dinosaurs. Something the film missed.

I'm a big fan of Robert Heinlein and I don't think that Starship Troopers is his best book. It's an interesting concept and even his less good books are still excellent.

I really like Starship Troopers the movie though, it's a great satire. I think Paul Verhoeven's managed to put just about every propoganda war movie cliche in there, and take a swipe at the media whilst he's doing it.

Labyrinth was, is, and shall ever remain, an amazing film! Nothing dated about it...plus David Bowie looked at his best in it, imo It is an absolute classic, had far greater impact on me than any other film.

I thought Hannibal was actually far better than silence of the lambs; beautiful setting, beautiful music...you ended up wanting him to get away with it (or was this just me... ). All three films were great actually...although Red Dragon didnt have the same appeal as you saw so little of Hopkins.

With Hannibal, the problem lies with my having read the book first. Sometimes I think I ought to have seen the movie without having read the book so I won't have any expectations.

Red Dragon was interesting - it referred to a mah-johng piece that Chinese people call 'the red middle' and American people call 'the red dragon'. Up until the movie, the only place I'd ever heard it referred to as 'the red dragon' is in a PC game called Shanghai.

If you put the Chinese characters for 'middle' and 'country' together, you get the Chinese word for China.

Yeah, but look at how cool it was that a couple of years ago, we had an African-American best actor AND best actress in the SAME YEAR! These are the people who thought that Denzel was better in "Training Day" than "The Hurricane".

Go Academy! They really know how to pick a winner!!

How can you people say that Citizen Kane has not stood the test of time? I have always pointed to it as the quintessential example of a timeless film.
