In my limited experience, Cohibas are the best. There are a lot of copy cats from nearby islands that claim they use seeds from CUBA. They are nice cigars but even I can usually tell the difference. Cohibas rule. And no I will not be shipping illegal cigars through the U.S. Mail. I have had good American Cigars but never a FINE American cigar.

I smoke them pretty regularly here in Turkey. They're good, but not necessarily head-and-shoulders above everything else; you can get a damned fine cigar from Honduras, the Dominican Republic, or Trinidad. In fact, a lot of Cuban houses also manufacture on other islands, so that they can sell their products in the US. The Cohibas rah was talking about might fall in that category, since Dominican Cohibas are sold in the US.

Still, my first Cuban -- a Romeo y Julieta Churchill -- may be the best cigar I've ever had; on the other hand, I smoked it on my honeymoon, so my judgment may have been, um, clouded.

Did it have a pointed end?

There are many, but the extremes being:
Fat/short with pointed end: Piramide.
Thin/long with pointed end: Lancero.
Fat/short with flat end: Robusto
Thin/long with flat end: Exquisito

Medium size (relatively small to relatively large): Especiale, Siglo II-V and Esplendido

Huge: Esplendido

Small (good for beginners): Siglo I

My size would be about a Siglo II or Especiale, that is, small end of medium size.

All between 4 and 7 inches long, and a gauge of 33-52 (thickness).

Yes. It's like Champagne. There are good sparkling wines from all over the world (Pelorus from Cloudy Bay in NZ being exceptional). But the best in the world are Champagnes. Sure, you pay for the name too, and therev is much dross sold becuase of the name, but still, for the best, it's gotta be a Champagne. Cigars are the same way, with Cuban being like Champagne (though possibly not quite the same difference).

Cigar diameters are measured in what are called "ring gauges." IIRC, these are 64ths of an inch; a cigar with a ring gauge of 48 is 3/4 " in diameter.
