Thatīs easy! After 100 years of Democracy they were confused themselves and couldnīt decide whether Communism was the better choice.

It's just a pretty cool piece of engineering and the programmers decided that a wonder even worse than the Oracle was required so it got the ability it has. For the effect, then I'm not sure which building or achievement could give you that: Olympic Games maybe (modern one of course), Geneva Convention?

The Eiffel Tower *should* have had the same, or similar effect as the Colossus does. I gather it brought trade to Paris, did it not?

They had to think of something, and hardly any of the wonder effects really make much sense anyway. But I guess it kind of represents the prestige the project brought to France. Then again, that could probably go for just about every wonder.

Considering how often we go to war, I'm thinking we have a Republic rather than a Democracy. But then, it's mostly after we've been "suprise attacked", so the Senate "will not interfere with continued peacekeeping operations"...

Yeah, how does it make sense that the Pyramids function as Granaries? They didn't put anything IN the Pyramids except dead guys, so unless your people are Eaters of the Dead , it makes no sense.

Possible justifications for wonders' effects-- hmmm.

Eiffel: it looks nice, and represents a culture refined and sophisticated enough to waste resources on a functionless piece of industrial art.

Pyramids: all those wooden ramps and stuff they used to build the Pyramids got broken down and reconstituted into Granaries. Eh? Eh?

Crusade: makes the faithful subjects back home work harder. But why just one city? Why not all of 'em, a la Hoover? Must be a pretty localized religion.

Statue of Liberty: represents the "liberty" to pick your own government! Eh? Eh? Laaaaaaame.
(P.S.- I concur with the assessment that the U.S. basically is a Fundamentalist state, now. The Lord rules us all through His conduit, GW Bush. That's what he believes! Really!)

Women's Suffrage: after the Woman start Suffraging all over the place, we need more police stations to keep them calm and domestic. Or perhaps the Suffragettes take over our nation's law enforcement duties? Cagney and Lacey strike back!

I remember some info from an old comic book claiming that corn was found in a recently opened pyramid. The seeds were 3000 years old and still edible. Maybe it is not such a stretch after all.

I always thought it was the association between Joseph saving Egypt with Granaries and the Israelites building the Pyramids. Remember Charlton Heston breaking into the Pharoah's royal granary in "Ten Commandments"? Vague memories of Sunday School Bible stories...

Actually, it does help for crop cultivation.

When the fields flood, the Pyramids give you a fixed point to mark out all the fields, even if all the other markings get washed away.

Someone destined for the Institute I'd assume.

They didn't have much choice with the ancient wonders though, but each had to have a positive effect. For the rest then I'd suspect that with Marco's and KRC they had the effect first and then thought of the wonder, but for Shake's and Sun Tzu it'd be the other way round. Obviously there was only one effect that Apollo could have, but what does everyone think of the rest?
I'd say that Hoover came first, then the effect fits nicely.This is probably the surprise package. If you explained it to someone who hadn't played then they'd think it was a bit rubbish, but seasoned players will regard it as among the most valuable.
