i had my best games with the spanish when i got lucky and managed to get some good soldiers, or cannons early along with a galleon. for consistancy both the english and dutch are good but overall i like the english a bit better.

My favourite is The Dutch
Not only do they get the Merchantman instead of a caravel in the beginning (meaning more immigrants coming in the one voyage), I could land and set up shop in Argentina, buy silver from the Incas dirt cheap, and that would be the only source of funds I needed until I got all of my factories across the colonies built and populated. That would set me up for an easy war of independence.

On the higher difficulty levels I can't live without the French bonus - otherwise I end up with too much native restlessness. Any of the other civ's bonuses I can compensate for.

It really does seem to depend where you land. I've tended to start in areas relatively dense with natives early on, which is perhaps why being the French has been so important to me (early conflict with natives = bad at higher levels.)
But you're right, if you land right near the Incas/Aztecs/Mayas being the Spanish might be better, and if you little early contact with either group of natives then the Dutch would probably be best.
