hey this reminds me. is there a way to stop ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING from coming to the front? I dont mind it blinking, but I hate it when it interrupts me.

if not, they better have this feature in longhorn.

I believe TweakUI has an option, "Prevent other windows from stealing focus".

Actually Longhorn is named after a bar between the Whistler and Blackcomb ski resorts in B.C., a frequent stop when going from Whistler to Blackcomb

Oddly enough, Windows XP is Whistler and Longhorn's successor is Blackcomb.

Should I salvage this thread to talk about how cool Avalon, Indigo, WinFS, and WinFX are?

Longhorn is as much of an upgrade as OS 9 to OS X was, except even more extreme and will have a bunch of radical new features OS X isn't close to having. And it'll be fully backwards compatible, too, something Apple can't figure out how to do.

I read up a bit on Longhorn the other day, but i can't say im 100% whats new about it. Noticed it seems to be using some hybrid XML intergated with .NET/C# .. but not sure to the extent of this , id heard a long way back that they were removing the WinXX environment and replacing it with some kind of .NET kernal ???? But im not at all convinced by that.

Id always thought it was Win64 (using WOW to run 32bit apps) and came with .NET installed, and has some extra wizzy XML based script ??

Any more to it ??

longhorn's the next version.

uses ntfs file system, but changes the way you store files. gone are the directories (well, folders these days) of ages past. you're going to be able to search them as you would a database.

you've got a new programming system. instead of having the piss-poor win32 api, you're getting a brand-new clean winfx api. unfortunately, rather than being direct hooks into the os, like win32, winfx will be managed code--meaning that there's going to be an added layer of separation between the program and the kernel.

there's also supposed to be a brand new graphics engine, which will do to windows what quartz did to osx.

you don't. you make it invisible to the user, though. the way storage is to work, at least according to them, is going to be a filesystem similar to the linux project "storage".

one uses metadata, stores it in a database. the sytem itself sorts the files to wherever they go, but when a person looks for a file, it runs a query on the system.
whatever the query returns...

that's how they plan on speeding up document, image, video, and music searches.

The familiar Explorer directoy structure will exist in Longhorn, but it's a "secondary" mechinism to the WinFS method.

As for Avalon doing what Quartz did to OS X, that's somewhat misleading -- Quartz is hardware accelerated, but it's not fully 3D like Avalon.

Windows are merely textures in Avalon, the desktop is stored in the GPU RAM, and vertex/pixel shading (DX9) can be done on all Windows.

Quartz is extremely primitive in comparison.
