This just in:

A guy videotaped another guy speeding quite furiously. He followed him a bit and videotaped it, and gave it to cops. He got 80 worth of fines, and the other one got 20 days worth of fines. Why? Because there's a new law, that forbids using cell phones and other communication devices when driving, I guess that includes videocameras too. Correct according to law? Maybe,,,
Justice? Hardly.

I'd love to be a judge here. Just get drunk every day and night, pull out sentences out of my ass.

So, the one videotaping got the higher sentence. about 4 times higher plus he's on 'parole' with his driverse license for a long time to come.

On the other hand, Finland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Revenge is no substitute for rehabilitation.

If you really want Texas-style "justice," that means more theft, more murders, as well as more prisons.

True. But then again.. violent crimes are up always.
Helsinki was Europes murder capital for a while compared to population. Lots of crimes are not reported to cops, they are settled before it gets there. I guess the more traditional crime is low, but violent crime is always UP starting from normal beatings all the way to murder. So that doesn't exactly make it safe. But sure, it's not very dangerous either.

Ramo, that I don't know. It has been always up. I guess it doesn't increase, since it's already so high. It just doesn't come down.

Hmmmm.. I though violent crime has been low in Finland (any extremely low by US standards). Would you mind pointing me to recent numbers?

Sure, comparing to the US it's low. But you have to consider that there are only 5 million of us. And like I said, beatings are considered fights, they don't go to courts. But even so, it's still high. I have to go to sleep soon, but I'll try to get some numbers from somewhere.
This is the only country I've felt threatened several times with physical violence, or been threatened on several occasions. But you see, we don't see them as crimes, we consider them fights, no matter if there were several assilants and victim didn't have a chance and didn't do anything. It's a fight. Also in here, you don't call the cops after you got beaten. I personally have witnessed so many fights and beatings I've lost count. I've also seen two stabbings in the same freaking night. Well only saw the one, and soon after I saw a victim on the ground few kilometers from that point.

But anyone who lives here can confirm what I say on the violent crimes. Also we are known in Sweden for being drunk stabbing bastards, and you think that comes for nothing, though it's kind of a joke and stereotype?
