They did "It's the Same Old Song," right? That's one of my favorites recordings ever. And it's used to great effect in Blood Simple (the first Coen Brothers movie).

I'm pretty sure it's either called that or just "Same Old Song"; I also love "I Can't Help Myself." And I didn't realize they did "Walk Away Renee"; I always though that was a British group. Did somebody else cover it?

It's The Same Old Song
The Four Tops

(Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Edward Holland, Jr.)

You're sweet as a honey bee
But like a honey bee stings
You've gone and left my heart in pain
All you left is our favorite song
The one we danced to all night long
It used to bring sweet memories
Of a tender love that used to be

Now it's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone
It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone

A sentimental fool am I
to hear a old love song
And wanna cry
But the melody keeps haunting me
Reminding me how in love we used to be
Keep hearing the part that used to touch my heart
Saying together forever
Breaking up never

It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone
It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone

Precious memories keep a lingering on
Everytime I hear our favorite song
Now you're gone
Left this emptiness
I only reminisce
The happiness we spent
We used to dance on the music
Make romance through the music

It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone
It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone

It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone
It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone

Maybe it wasn't as big a hit in the UK, and so didn't make the compilation. Who knows? Anyway, enjoy! I have to get some of that great mid-sixteis R&B when I get back to the States...

I like Motown in general but I always thought Levi Stubbs had quite a weak voice compared to, say, David Ruffin or Smokey Robinson or Marvin Gaye. And although I do acknowledge the greatness of HDH as songwriters I've always prefferred Smokey in that respect too... But then I'm a ridiculously obsessive Miracles fan.

Stew, I truly recommend the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Ultimate Collection. Don't have a compo of the Temptations entire career but some of their albums are brilliant too, so I suppose that would be another natural buy from Motown itself. After that I guess you're out of the male vocal harmony genre... Still, there are loads of great motown solo artists, female harmony groups etc. to look into.

Put an end to popups!

A lot of the acts were one hit wonders, so the songs are better know than the performers, try 'The Snake', 'The right track' 'major Lance', 'nobody'

If you like that stuff, I'll have a look through my CD's and recommend you some more

Martha & The Vandella...awesome

One of my favorite 1970's movies "The Warriors"....................http://www.cinema.com/features/cast.phtml?ID=7630

This had their song "No where to run"

I also love "Dancing in the Streets" and "Jimmy Mack"

On a somewhat related note..

I bounced at several concerts in Maine when we had Herb Reed and what was left of the Platters...http://www.theplatters.com/disc.html

It is awesome when you hear legends like this up close...or in my case , maybe too close

I worked beside stage to keep folks off of it.

Peace
