	Who is on your money? Got spare money?

Ok, another money thread.

Looking through my cash I saw something interesting. A few Italian Lire bills here, and I was interested in who the Italians choose to put on the bills. Montessori, Marconi, and Bellini on the ones I have. An educator, an inventor, and an artist (right?). In the US we just have Presidents and other famous political leaders. Quite a different approach I see in Italy.

Who or what does everyone else's money choose to honor? For the Europeans, lemme know both what y'all have on your Euro coins, but also from your currency before the switch.

Azazel, I've got a Shekel that doesn't fit the above list. Its got a numerial 1 on the front, and the back has what looks like wheat. Arabic writing on the side and Hebrew on the bottom. Its of a light material, like tin or something. Its edge is all bumpy.

Good to know the Brits have some creativity. Problem is your colonies have the same problem. My Canadian coins and Bermuda coin all have the Queen on them too.

Although The Queen is on the front of all UK currency, the reverse side is a bit more interesting. But they keep changing the cast:

£5 note: Currently, Elizabeth Fry, an early 19th century prison reformer. Formerly, George Stephenson, engineer/inventor(locomotives and railways).

£10 note: Currently, Charles Darwin. Formerly, Charles Dickens with a scene from the cricket match at Dingley Dell which is based on an illustration from the first edition of the "Pickwick Papers".

£20 note: Currently, Sir Edward Elgar, Edwardian composer. Formerly, Michael Faraday, Physicist.

£50 note: Sir John Houblon, the first Governor of the Bank of England.

I'm pretty sure Shakespeare was on the back of a note at some point but can't remember which one.

Notice the similarity to the case of the US $10,000 bill. These bankers must be a bit egotistical.

Also, it seems we have you Yanks to blame for the very existence of most of these denominations:

Shakespeare was on the first "famous personages" range- he was on the £20.

Others in the same range were Sir Isaac Newton (£1), The Duke of Wellington (£5), Florence Nightingale (£10) and Sir Christopher Wren (£50).

Those are the Italian versions of the Euro-Coins (because every nation have different things on their coins)

As for the old Italian Lira... very often the same coin could have different images and sametimes even different sizes... (the only thing that didn't change was the number written in it) So it is difficult to find a picture with ALL of them in it.

On the coins we have: some strange animal (on the 50-øre, wtf is that?), a bird, the king's monogram, order of St. Olav, the king's face, a church and a viking ship.

the notes:
50 kroner: Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. Together with a guy called Moe, he gathered all the folk tales in one book.
100 kr: Kirsten Flagstad, an opera singer
200 kr: Kristian Birkeland, a scientist and inventor of artificial fertiliser IIRC
500 kr: Sigrid Undset, an author (she won the Nobel prize!)
1000 kr: Edvard Munch, greatest painter ever
