KenThur - Since a major aspect of a Swiss Tourney is to keep players with equal scores playing each other, it is very hard to set up Round 3 pairings until Round 2 is complete.

Don't worry about that, just keep at your game until complete. There are other ongoing Round 2 games... Things may be more settled after this coming weekend!

Got spare money?

Fifth session and Horse goes over to the offensive, much skirmishing as finbar counter punches. Finbar finds time for some sneaky city building but is hampered by some poor naval battle outcomes and an ill fated invasion. At close of play Horse has 19 cities and 68 units but the gap is closing - finbar 15 cities and 39 units. Horse built Pyramids.

This is about as much fun as duels get

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Damn Great Wall!

Damn trireme battles where the outcome appears to be random. Whichever tri gets in the first shot wins, but, somehow or other, the initiator of the battle often doesn't get in the first shot, which seems to defy logic. And damn and curse a vet tri losing out to a non-vet tri!

Apart from that - yeah, it's about as much fun as this one-dimensional form of the game can be. Helps to have senses of humor on both sides, but.

I did propose to the Horse that we draw it out till the end - 2020AD - and tell cavebear it was a draw. Just to see what that little complication did to his calculations. Interestingly, the Horse - Supreme Provocateur and King Stirrer - preferred to go for the win. Mmmmmmm. Everyone has their price.

Since each duel is worth 4 points, a draw would result in both players getting 2 points each. That wouldn't be a problem, though it might tend to put both players together in 1 of the 2 MP rounds.

The sixth session saw Horse continue his offensive against fin's North Western cities. 2 were captured, bringing the horse force to the frontiers of fin's heartland. Finbar however opened a second front on Horseland's South Eastern border, capturing 1 city. The logic of this initiative from finbar, who is now in dire straits in our opinion, eludes us. But perhaps all will be revealed in time.

At close of play, finbar had 14 cities and 44 units. The Mighty Horse had 24 cities and 91 units. It's 1750(ish).

Update on the Crusty vs Milo, Persians vs Babylonians marathon...we're up to 1871(!).
Finally got muskets & cannons few turns ago. Fleets of ironclads & troop-carrying frigates have pounded away at each other. Bombarding cities & musketers until the entrance to the Crusty Persians' Bay of Blood is lined with twisted & rusting ironplate.

He finally located & destroyed my advance cities. Taking out 2 of them with a combination of continueous sabotage(sneaky little, cheap diplomats!), shore bombardment, & finally invasion by crusaders.
I, the great PRESIDENT of the deomcractic & prosperous Bab's, retaliated by turning a # of his fundamentist, "true believer" ironclads into Bab "converts" that sought to amend the error of their ways by counterattacking their former evil shipmates & hapless crusaders on the open plains. But then more came & came & finally overwhelmed the forces of democracy... at great cost to us both of us.

Enboldened by his successes against my little forward cities on the coastal plains + being the fanatics that they are; the evil empire proceeded to decimate their entire SW fleet of ironclads & frigates against my port-thru-the-mountain city. Placed there leading into what had been a private Persian inland lake. We have decorated the valient vet musket units with our nations highest unit citation... the Milo Mangle'm Award! After that exchange, even the fanatics withdrew with their "new tail lights" a'shining.

Despite these "victories" according to units killed, his aggressiveness was well-timed (as i'm sure he knew). Because, as these battles at the front raged, the great Bab sciencific/economic/industrial combo finished Darwin's & jumped to metallurgy. Thus bringing down that damnedable "Great" Wall & most of their little city walls!! But alas, with 2 out of 3 forward bases gone (along with half the navy )... the great holy war to free the Persian slaves from their Ayatolla will have to wait for... (sorry, state secret).

Ayah-told-ya Crustacian denies any knowledge of any such Capitalist Infedel propaganda by Senator Milo. Stocks rose sharply in heavy trading on Hoodwinker Street today, as news from overseas of many converting to Crusty principals was recieved. The Ayah-told-ya Himself was onhand to greet the heros of the foreign wars returning to holy ground.
Ah-las was clearly with them revealed The A. Crustacian.

The logic of taking an opponent's city eludes you, Horse? Mmmmm. Say no more.

In reality, with the Great Wall, and with a number of your cities either built in trees, or surrounded by trees - with (at least) one built on a mountain! - your cities are well nigh impossible to attack. One makes inroads where one can, obviously.

The Horse-v-finbar epic concluded with a concession on my part. I could've strung it out another hundred years or more, but what's the point? I probably didn't have the legs to get to 2020AD.

And the hundred bucks in the plain brown envelope desposited in cavebear's letterbox produced nothing.

Horse played exceedingly well, even managing to top his usual high standards in the city naming department.

Well done, Horse, and I salute you. Even if the Bob Menzies namesake doesn't.

Well, Nappy has taken charge in our game. It's about 1600 AD, and he beat me to Wall by one turn, Leo's by one turn, and Statue by about five turns. And he built all three in the same city! Talk about your caravan rushes...! On the other hand, my empire is only slightly smaller than his, and because of Sun Tzu, which is mine, an attempted conquest would be very protracted.

I hereby offically concede our game to Crusty.
Tho time is on my side in our game... but it's against me in the world of reality.
Crust's got most the wonders & interior lines, i'v got some key wonders (Sun's,Adam's,Women's, & Magell's), the cities, & about 6 tech's advantage(including explosives & those great RR & fortress-building engr's!). The the Stat's & Powergraph still show me ahead despite his recently upgraded army.

But all of this dosen't matter a hoot if we can't get this thing finished. Between my micro-managing(have to @deity & no happy wonders), the bugs, & both of us being good players that refuse to be knocked out easily... we have spent DAYS on this thing!
And after wasting 2.5 hours yesterday "discussing" why his password & names go away & finally confirming yet another bug* I HAD to pull the plug. My relationships & practice cannot afford my spending this much time & thot on something that does nothing for them!

I REALLY wish i could continue not just this game, but this entire hobby! Despite it's (many) flaws, most of which are coming out as we tough, knowledgable competitors push the limits in thess closely-fought contests(as in any sport, right Nappy?), this game/addication is FANTASTIC!
But as with an addication, after the rush & the good stuff comes the remorse & guilty & bummer when reality hits U in the face AGAIN with all the things that havn't gotten done while U were immersed in your "other world".

So to a most excellent & deserving, & as of yet, unmarried Civ'er... I concede thee this victory, President Crustian! Nice work holding me at bay.
PS: What is your password. I told U my password, "4444". Which, BTW is the same on all my games guys, so if U care to or have a need to open my civ in any game we had going.

*Bug: if U move a caravan next to a city that demands it's cargo, but wait for even 1 turn for the cities involoved to grow or complete a trade-enhancing improvement or your civ to finish researching current advance...it stops demanding that commodity!!!! Happened FOUR times, twice with the same caravan after shipping him from 1 end of the world & then back again(& U wonder why my turns took long?).
=============================================
So long gentle(?)men. I'm having to permanently retire from CivII until i can retire from life.
Too many bugs, too much time, & too many differing schedules of players from all around the world.
Good luck to U all... in Civ MP & real life!

Perhaps we'll "meet" again after Civ III fixes all the cheats & short-comings of earlier versions.

Suffering from ads?

Our duel is a good game, being as it was not so far way one sided and presented a challenge in many ways.
Tho having the happy wonders in the early part of the game Milo knew how to keep pressure on me to keep me from expanding rapidly, and snagged Magellans to keep me from a desisive lead at sea which I had thought was in the bag for me, and was very important in this game more than usual. Milo was first on power graph for much of the game but by no means by far hehe.

A lot could be said about this game, but with Copernicus & Isaac Newtons in Bergen, and much infrastructure, Tactics on the way in 1 turn if I wish it that soon, and it will be very hard for Milo to find a city to steal it from being they have nearly all been used to support his science, and I stole a few my own self I can either get 1000 gold or a tech every turn or two depending on what I need, so time may not be on Milos side ...

(only time would really tell )...

as we both have great growth potential. With SOL I have the UNSTEALABLE choice of fundy for the time being too and by saving 2000 gold in the bank before changing over my units would not be easily or practically bribed. But Milos Babylonian Magellans and for a few turns more a cruiser advantage at sea, is a concern to me, but not for long....

Milo is a clever player, with good tactical skills on the battle field, and able to build a strong Civ without happy wonders is not allways easy.

I decline to swap passwords, and do not wish my civ looked into Milo. Neither will I look inside yours. But am keeping this save in case you wish to resume this game someday.

This was the second time Milo offered to conceed, the first time we worked our way through it cuz the game was not truely decided. It is not truly decided even now but...

I ACCEPT YOUR SURRENDER THIS TIME.

I will not tell my strategy this time in case we can resume this, but I truely believe it is a winner according to my assesment of the game so far. Of course this is the official word from the Persians.

I am confident of winning due to the amount and nature of the options available to me presently. Butttt then ...only time would tell, so a conceeded win does not feel the same as an actual win when the other player surrenders due to hopelessness. This is by no means the case here in our game. Milos Babs are a very potent and formidable foe, and directed by a clever ruler. So the game is not in the bag even tho I believe in time it would be.

Lets play it out as time permits eh Milo? Even if it is a couple turns a week, during truely spare time?

Yes it was weird how my password vanished a couple times and had to be re entered.
And even tho this was a deity game I could only get 50 for barb leaders. The pigs also had Ännievale for a bunch of turns while I built a happyness wonder and watched helplessly "my" red city on top 5!!!
But the happyness wonders secured and city liberated all was well.

Don't know what to think on the caravan and commodities delima described by Milo. Just figured it was the chance taken when you shipped commodities that they may not still be in demand when they arrive. Just allways accepted this.
Is it a bug?

Tired of ads?

Crusty--the money you get for barb leaders does not depend on the difficulty level, but on the level of barbs. Since these duels were played on Roving Bands, the barb leader is worth only 50.

Milo--re caravans, I don't think that's a bug, but instead an important feature. Early in the game cities demand hides. Later in the game (after building factories, in fact) cities demand oil. It makes sense. Though I admit it does screw up particularly long caravan treks.
