I agree, the ignore list is just a form of auto-censorship - indeed, as the word suggests it merely promotes ignorance...

Maybe that's why posters like Lefty and Skywalker appear to like using it...

Yes, users which have been deleted from the database are automatically ignored. MarkG once had a problem with his account once and solved it by deleting his old account while creating a new one. So when you view old posts of him (of when he still had his old account), he will be on ignore. Same for a whole bunch of other posters who no longer exist, or exist under a new account.
