	What was the first online game ever? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Im doing a project for cs101 (super duper intro class to cs.. like learning windows and msword ****) and my topic is online gaming. And I was wondering, what was the first game to have online multiplayer capability? Was it doom? I cant seem to recall an online game older than doom (since I first went online when I played doom )

Besides that, the earliest I can think of is Populous (from 1989 I think).

1989? Pffff.

You could play games online via BBS before that, IIRC. I remember the text-based games where you'd run a country and buy troops and stuff, and you and your BBS fellows would launch attacks against other BBSes. What fun!

something like that. Chess and text based games can be done anywhere communication is available (well text based would have to be speech based via phone..) so it doesnt really count.

I agree with UR that MUD's we're probably the first real-time online game.

I was probably the only guy in my dorm wing who didn't flunk out of school that year from playing NannyMud. But close. Real close.

MUD's were cool. Still are. When you become a wizard you can start constructing your section of the world.

I played real time MP games on the Worldwide PLATO network back in the mid 70's. Air Fight (jet fighter combat) and Moon Wars were two popular games. PLATO was based at the University of Illinois and was accessable from most countries around the globe. I would be in games with guys playing from Russia, Japan, the UK... it was great.

It was a dedicated netork. I also took a lot of classes on it. And whenever I would get bored, I would switch log ons and just play games.
