Where next? 1550 settler Increase the size of your Attachments

We need to decide where to place the next city. The settler in Chow completes in 1550, turn after next.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

My post from the "Next 8 Cities" thread:

quote:
Looking at the situation, I'd like to settle the furs next, then the horses after that, then spices, and then the chokepoint fourth. Perhaps even fifth if we can get irrigation down to those plains resources soon.

The furs gives us production. We can always use production, and the furs site should be able to get up to 5spt, enough to build a 20-shield unit every 4 turns. With this site up and running at 5 spt and Buffet at 10 spt, we shouldn't need another barracks for a while; our other cities can focus on workers, temples, and perhaps a catapult or settler here or there.

If Planter proceeds to road a path S, SW, and S again to the horse, the 1425 settler from Chow would be nicely timed to arrive in the area just as the horse road was completed. The spices settler would overshoot the worker just slightly, but spices will help us grow to size 6 (and, in combination with an eventual incense hookup, reduce reliance on MP).

That the south open to the fourth settler. By the time that settler is completed, we can road all the way S-S-SE-S-S-S to just NE of the chokepoint site. With the road, reinforcements can be much quicker to arrive should someone attack. (And those reinforcements might even include a horse or two.)

We need the road to the chokepoint to even consider iron connection anyway. However, this order does leave the area S of our core open to other's exploration.

I still think we should at least settle the furs next. The horse and spice connections aren't so important, but the furs will allow us to get some more production up and going in a reasonably uncorrupted city that will have 2 bonus grasses.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

From chat...my reasons for sending the settler to the chokepoint first and then settling the fur city next....First, it will take a few turns to get the tiles of the fur city going with only one worker there. It will be working uninmproved tiles for a bit and I hate doing that. My second reason is that the sooner we get the chokehold, the sooner we can keep the others unaware of where our true core lies. If we control all three tiles across, no one can cross that way and see our true core without going around the lake.

Also, for the chokepoint city I recommend the hill tile that is one tile south of Kloreep's 'P' and one tile west of my '5'. That will bring the iron in to the city radius as well as allowing only one possible route from that chokepoint for the other civs to our core (one tile where they can move N without touching our radius) and we can block that off anyway.

I would also like to settle the chokepoint city first, for several reasons, mostly agreeing with Rhoth. Also, Sharpe had a good location picked out, which I believe is the same one Rhoth suggests above. That would be my choice

It's annoying, yes, but then the chokepoint would also be working unimproved tiles. And likely for longer than the furs would. Also, the furs will be a nicely productive city, and certainly more productive than all the way down at the chokepoint, both before and after improvement; it can produce units in a reasonable time with some growth and mining, and the nearby river will allow us to rake in more commerce, an area where demographics report us falling behind to #3. Also, while improvements certainly will make it the productive city it can be, growth so that there's pop to work those improvements is also important, and the sooner the city is founded the sooner it will grow regardless of improvements.

True. And I would like to conceal the amount of food resources we have if possible.

I agree, this city site looks optimal.

Tired of ads?

Some extra info:

1st settler ready in 2 turns
2nd settler ready in 7 turns
3rd settler ready in 11 turns
4th settler ready in 15 turns

If we sent 2 workers to road to the choke city in a S-SE-S-S-S from the Chow cow, roads would be done in 3-5-7-9-11-13 turns (assuming no difficulties such as barbs).

Thus 1st settler would reach choke city in 8 turns
2nd settler would reach choke city in 12 turns
3rd settler would reach choke city in 15 turns
4th settler would reach choke city in 18 turns

If we decide not to build the choke city with the 1st settler, we should send a unit down to guard the area anyway.

A good scenario for this would be to send Spork the spearman from Chow starting next turn - sending Spoon from DimSum to replace him in Chow (leaving DimSum empty , but there is little danger from barbs - then sending him back when the next spear is done) - if we did that, Spork would reach the choke city site in 6 turns.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Well, the Sunshine warrior "Gary's Brother is S of Salt's mountain. No chance of keeping them from finding our core now.

However, me being the fur advocate I am, I must point out this decreases the value of blocking the chokepoint immediately, since a map of our southeast will be in Sunshine's control in addition to ours, and we could not guarantee LL and MAST would not gain knowledge of it even if they never got a warrior through.

You crack me up. If you're that set on having the fur city now I don't have a problem with it. Either way we'll have both soon.

Put an end to popups!

I don't want to force anything through by force of will; if the chokepoint city remains the majority decision, let's settle the chokepoint city. I just figure that even on a, err, lighly activitied team, only 3 votes must mean there are some more voters I might convince.

Actually I think we're heavily active. We have four active members and one moderately active member. Some teams only have two active members. Still....two of our active members haven't voted.

Ok, the turn will be here soon. I'm going to change my vote from chokepoint to furs, but as long as I can get a guarantee that the chokepoint will be next
